Cook and Rowlands not handed squad numbers for new season

Queens Park Rangers duo Lee Cook and Martin Rowlands appear likely to be on the move after not being handed squad numbers for the new Premier League season.

Doubts over the duo's future emerged earlier this summer after they failed to make a pre-season friendly appearance, as well as the squads that toured Cornwall and Italy.

Cook and Rowlands now look set to leave Loftus Road and could be joined by Leon Clarke, Gary Borrowdale and Antonio German.

The trio were also not handed a squad number by manager Neil Warnock and look set to leave the top-flight newcomers.

Summer signing Jay Bothroyd was handed the number 10 jersey, while fellow new-boys Danny Gabbidon and Kieron Dyer were given six and eight respectively.

Talisman Adel Taarabt retains the number seven shirt, while an article on the club's website highlighted the fact the number nine shirt still remains vacant.

Speculation suggests that Blackpool striker DJ Campbell will take the number if he completes his move to QPR this week.

QPR announced last week that the Tangerines had accepted a bid for the striker, reportedly of £1.25million.

Well something has to give as according to my calculations we are going to be over the PL limit for over-21 players. Shame it has to be two of our most loyal and admired players however. Why can't Hulse get on his bike? Rhetoric of course as who would buy him (other than NW)?

Rowlands was my favourite player for a long time, im actually really sad to see them go but as northolt says they're too good as people to not be playing games, its sad cos both of these players deserve to play in the premier league (for QPR) especially Rowly, these are the last two standing drom the promotion season aswell i think

Cookie and Rowly are, and always will be, QPR legends. Both for their loyalty to the club and for their ability when on the top of their game. Cook's generosity to the club during the tough years won't be forgotten.

That said, neither are the player they once were, and neither would have figured in the first team this season. So for them, getting a move somewhere they will get first team action and the love of a new set of fans is a good thing, and I wish both of them well, wherever they end up.

As this is my 1000th post, I can’t think of a better way of using it that to play tribute to two of our most important players over the last decade.

Martin Rowlands always gave everything to the cause. He was part of Ollie’s plans of signing passionate players who would run through walls for the club, and possibly, along with Wild Thing, the best personification of this. He seemed to pop up with important goals when they were most needed, as well as constantly driving the team forwards throughout the whole of the match. If he hadn’t got injured playing for his country, I’m sure he would still be in our team. Someone will pick up a gem when they sign him from us.

Lee Cook, in my opinion, was the catalyst that started our return from the pits. He was signed on loan shortly after the Vauxhall Motors game and kicked started the team’s rise up the table and into the play offs. Sure he fading in games, but what player of his type didn’t. Who can forget seeing him roasting fullbacks, twisting them one way then the other, before unleashing a pin point accurate cross. On his day, he was virtually unstoppable. And let’s not forget his incredible generous act of donation his signing on fee from Fulham back to our club. It’s desperately sad that he didn’t properly recover from his knee injury.

There are both true QPR legends.

This is why I still thought maybe he could do a good job for us. In all honesty, I don't think he ever got a full chance to come back from the injury. It was obvious that he was going to be a bit rusty but no one gave him enough time, I think. His crosses are still killer. They come in so fast, with such a lethal curve.

Both absolute legends over the last few years, Rowlands a talisman and Cook a bright Spark, injury a big problem for both as we all know. Rowlands never seemed to figure in Warnocks plans unfortunately

It's all been said. I agree wholeheartedly with everything written above. These are 2 players who were pivotal to some of the most passionate, exciting and emotional seasons I can remember watching rangers.

Thanks cooky and rowly, all the best.

    Warnock: Cook is still leaving

There will be no reprieve for Lee Cook at QPR despite his impressive performance against Crawley.

Cook, on as a half-time substitute, showed glimpses of his former self, scoring a goal and producing a number of useful crosses in Tuesday‘s pre-season friendly.

But manager Neil Warnock later insisted he still expects the injury-plagued winger, who is in his second spell at Rangers, to move on before the start of the season.

The same applies to Martin Rowlands, who like Cook was not given a squad number for the new campaign and has known for some time that he is surplus to requirements at Loftus Road.

Warnock said: “I was pleased for Lee that he scored that goal. He had a good game and he’s done ever so well really.

“He needs to play though, and he wants to play. I’m sure he’ll move on and the same applies to Martin Rowlands. To be honest, I’m surprised somebody hasn’t come in for them before now.”
