Voyager had a great premise. Firstly, a crew made of starfleet members and then with them, rebels. Secondly this disparate group are thrown together at the other end of the galaxy to find their way home. The trouble was they never really explored the fractured relationship between the rebels and starfleet. They all assimilated quickly and the 3-6 main characters all shared the same outlook most of the time in any given situation. It was all far too hunkydorey. The great thing about the original was the arguments and differences in opinion between the likes of Kirk, Spock and Bones - often where the viewer could see some merit in each character's point of view whether they were appealing to raw emotion, logic or our humanity. I really think Voyager missed a trick there. Even when they had one of the senior rebels go against the starfleet crew they turned her into a baddie and ****ed her off which was a stupid thing to do
Yeah...always thought Voyager was an attempt to get back to the original...exploration...even if forced. But terrible actors. The exploration of disparate groups put together was done much better in the new Battlestar
Watched Amy, the Amy Winehouse documentary. She really was screwed over by people, that Blake Fielder should be strung up. 7.5/10
How was it written though? Lots of peoples views giving a full picture from all angles or an interpretation from one side of things?
One view, an interesting one though. The director has done a great job of capturing her spirit but also does a hatchet job on her Dad and Blake, right of wrong I have no idea but there's enough footage to suggest that the 2 of them certainly didn't help.
Saw that new ghostbusters one, was alright 6-7/10. How they were neutralising the ghosts and where they were sending them to didn't really make sense and wasn't really explained but i guess that doesn't matter. In the originals you knew they were trapping the ghosts in the portable boxes and storing them in the big chamber at their HQ which was essentially a limbo or hell for ghosts. Here there's too much going on, are hey trapping them, blowing them apart, reversing them? It was quite funny in places with a couple of hilarious bits i.e. the ozzy osbourne cameo 'Sharon ... I'm having another flashback' and the black one's line 'Well ... guess he's going to Queens'. Seemed like they couldn't decide as well whether the events in the original films had ever taken place or not with cameos from the previous actors and ghosts but the NY populace being pretty ignorant about the threat of ghosts. Chris Hemsworth was good as the receptionist ... good range to go from man-bimbo to sinister-evil-want-to-end-the-world-guy to back again with his deli sandwich. But yeah, was anti-climactic and underwhelming ultimately and lacked the sense of real menace/scariness mixed with quirky offbeat humour of the originals (apart from the very opening actually with the house tour and their investigation there which was pretty creepy, but then the film got much more frivolous about everything)
I'd agree on both counts... Although stopped watching battlestar after first 2 or 3 seasons because it got too preachy. Maybe it was a made up religion for the show but it was still obnoxious. That started as a fantastic show though. Voyager did have one good actor. I thought the Doctor did a good job.
Agreed..first couple of series...really had that claustrophobic feel of the ww2 submarine films... It went silly in theme by the end...I watched it all and after accepting its change of tact thought the ending was ok but wished it had stayed on its bleak course. With maybe a tiny bit of hope to end with.
Saw Trek Beyond...loved it...those that don't like the reboot won't but those that do ...it's definitely more in line with the series with the blockbuster thrown in...
I went in expecting it to be **** but was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed it though I wouldnt call it a great film. BUT I have to say I don't think the film was let down by casting the main characters with women (which was what put me off originally). It was let down by a weak script and lacklustre gags. It was all a bit flat. Just when you expected the music "I aint afraid of no ghost" to kick in and get the adrenalin going for the action scenes, it wasnt there. I remember the buzz of the original. The queues around my local Odeon cinema and the number 1 chart topper. Everything and everyone was sporting the logo and every TV programme talking about it. One of the biggest movies of my childhood along with Star Wars, ET and Rambo. It's such a shame the "reboot" has been such a damp squib
Yeah.. you are probably right. They were really weak in this. A them and us type thing for at least two seasons was required. Chakotay or however you soell it was a complete sycophant. Immediately he fellninto being the captains tea getter. Tuvok was proven as a spy in their midst etc
Or even coming up against a situation or adversary where each held strong opposing views that the viewer could still relate to or sympathise with and with a storyline that explored these no matter how controversial. E.g. the rights and wrongs of anhialating a species to protect yourself etc. Or pre-emptive strikes etc. Or genetic engineering... The original series was always a commentary on the real world.
Yes which is why the original series is still shown and spawns the whole star trek universe. Shows that strike a commentary like this always seem to get more of a buzz. Homeland season 1 for example. Huge buzz. It then chased whats happening now and squeeze it in and ended up with piss poor plots and story telling... like when they went to pakistan just cos bin laden was found there or the berlin rubblish season Star trek was able to take a concept or issue and divorce itself from the setting of the 1960s and show why it was either wrong ir ridiculous.
