Senator David Norris has withdrawn from the campaign following revelations of a letter wriitten to the Israeli authorities asking for clemency for a former partner. Norris was an independant candidate who was ahead in the polls and still had sizable support even after the controversial stories recently.

It is obvious to me that there has been a campaign against him because Ireland is not ready for an openly gay President. The timing of the revelations of this letter and the resurfacing of comments made in 2002 is just too coincidental for me. He was the best candidate for the job and now the way is clear for someone running on a part ticket.

This is a dark day for Irish democracy.

It'd be a lot darker with a president who is former lover of a ***** and sympathises with him over being caught

Every election encompasses a dirty tricks campaign. The people invest too much money to afford not to use such an image smearing bit of information.

Demonstrates the very obvious deficiencies in a democratic system but its what we have got

He wrote a letter in support of a fella who was convicted of having underage sex with a boy. He is a self obbsessed arsehole anyway. Stop putting up articles about Irish politics anyway, every **** on 606 must think we are utter ballbags.

Greed and corruption are not cultural phenomenons, they are human ones. How many times down the years have English politicians been embroiled in controversy?

Exactly however it is more prevelent in Ireland mate. The country( THAT I LIVE IN ) always has someone husing things up the church for example we are a joke and frankly I am ashamed of the collective irish ****e and I prefer to embrace my english roots. The english although not perfect have the decency to acknowledge the child abuse is not just a mortal sin ( irish clergy) but a ****ing CRIME.

The Irish clergy take their orders from the Vatican so I would blame them just as much for the handling of what happened to children in religious institutions.

Wasn't david norris one of the blokes who killed steven lawrence? I kind of thing that's a good argument not to have him as Irish President........
