Why not? A good man manager.is what you want. That means being able to motivate a sulky brat. Warnock managed it. So did Hughes. So did Seedorf. Harry failed. Twice. If you want a clearer example - he managed to motivate us to two dreadful relegations from the PL blaming everyone else including his teams. The first time his excuse was that he inherited a bunch of duds and did not have enough time to save us - only 26 games as I recall and the disastrous January transfer window. The second time he left us because of a knee injury having motivated HIS TEAM to the most abject set of performances away from home I can ever remember. As examples of good man managers who get the best out of the team they have, Harry is not the man that immediately springs to my mind. There are a couple who have managed us recently who are worthier candidates for that reputation.
Sam is painted as a dinosaur, but in fact the opposite is true. He was ahead of his time carrying out technical analysis of players etc. He will motivate the over paid twats and that's the most important thing imo. We have talented young players. They need to play without fear. The best tactician in the world wouldn't necessarily guarantee that.
I totally agree with you Col....but would like to add Fat Sam is not that bad a tactician either....it is not just motivation that gets his teams out of trouble...it is knowing when to close up shop, and when and how to go out for a win. He does all those things pretty damn well. We could do worse, a lot worse (Harry being one of them)
What we need to remember is that England are not dining at the top table of football anymore. We are a below average side with players who are not motivated enough to show some passion and fight. Sam is the perfect fit for the role at the moment. He has done similar jobs in the Premiership. I am not saying for one moment that he could lead us to world cup win, but he could give us a team that fights for each other and some pride. Sunderland is a perfect example of what he can do with a team that was all but dead and buried.
I agree with all of that. But can someone explain to me why all the groans on this board whenever he is mentioned for the one job that matters most - the hot seat at Loftus Road. If he is good enough for England then surely..........................
I got Big Sam on the BBC thingmajig. He would get my vote as he would not take any BS from the overpaid, pampered a...holes that should wear the England shirt with pride...but only care about their next holiday. He wouldn't be scared of dropping Rooney or Hart (who appeared he couldn't even catch a cold. Howe would be a good one to groom into future England manager. Although papertalk suggests he is after Caulker, IF the player himself could start to believe in his ability rather than just pick up a pay check he could still end up with a decent career.
If Sam is so good why isn't he a Manager at a top PL Club? The England job is one of the most attractive managerial jobs going in football, and the FA should be looking for one of the best managers in World football to fill it. None of the "favourites" listed on here come close for me.
Sam Allardyce. Your likes of Man ure, Chelski Arsenal all want foreign coaches with out giving someo f the UK managers a chance...but when the brown stuff is hitting the fan, and the owners can see their sky money disappear they go to Sam. He users the resource he has, and manages to get the players into believing in themselves. He has also had some interesting and talented players in his teams, especially at Bolton. Personally, I don't think Steve Bruce would be any good, Pardew loves himself too much and there would be an ego lash with his and the players if he got the job. Wonder how Dave Bassett - the old Wimbledon boss would have done in charge. At least it would have been become more interesting on the international scene!
Managers of teams who performed well or above expectations based on player calibre at the Euros would be the ideal place to start looking. Fernando Santos would be a good shout I think, he did well with Greece and won it with Portugal - I doubt he takes much cr*p and Portugal kept winning when they were up against it. Looked like they had a few world stars and good team spirit. Getting Lars Lagerback out of retirement could be another. He's done well with Sweden, Nigeria and now Iceland. Might be best with his Icelandic Coach Halgrimsson. Poland's Novalka, Germany's Low, Frances DesChampes, Hungary's Storck are all worth a look. Chris Coleman and Martin O'Neil are possibilities to if the FA want to keep local. Then there are the successful South American National Managers and the current Managers of the top European and English Clubs. Some of these top managers will surely jump at the chance to get a national team with the history and potential of England back to where they ought to be.
Portugal won two games in normal time, Lagerback will not come out of retirement to manage England - his record thus far is unblemished, with England it could be in tatters. Low, Deschamp will never leave their respective roles to take a step down. Novalka and Storck are not good enough to see the job through on a long term basis.
It's like that scene at the beginning of Mike Bassett when they go through all the plausible candidates and no one wants the job.
Their obligated to interview all interested parties, but its Big Sam's if he wants it ! Currently 1/5 to get the job.
I think Big Sam and Bruce would make me happy, but it will never happen. Happy that both would the required Premier league experience would be good if they had more European games under their belts but we can't have everything. The recruitment process appears to be sensible and timely but not rushed. What is going on at the FA? They are usually offering 5 million quid and the secretary to the first flash Fabio that fax his CV.
Bruce and Allardyce? Scraping the barrel a bit there lads. Both of them are managing low level PL clubs for a reason. The FA pay their head coach a first class salary for a reason. Raise your expectations a bit and don't get stuck on "he must be an Englishman". Broaden the net and you will get the right man. Stick to the lower reaches of the PL and you will be back to square one in 4 years time when it goes tits up again. Some people are asking for suggestions as to who might be suitable. Here's one who I haven't seen anybody mention yet. As it happens, he is English. Eddie Howe at Bournemouth. He is young and up and coming. Did a great job getting such a small club promoted from L1 to the PL and did an even better job keeping them there so comfortably. He is my suggestion.
