I'd agree - at the point where Saints are the ones letting a player go, I don't begrudge their personal choice at all. We may have said the same for Rickie Lambert if he left us for a Chinese club. He was in the England squad at the time too. Yet looking back, I bet he wishes he'd had a £150k a week offer from China!!

 

Definitely, and why Saints are doing it right in my book. Why rock the boat on stupid wages for a single superstar player who during his stay unsettles the dressing room by earning more than everyone and, when he leaves, leaves the club in an upwards spiral of wage precedents.

 

I fully believe Rickie thought the dream was going to continue when he left us. He thought hard work and application would keep him around the fold in both case, Pool & England. I don't think he would have taken the China bucks.

 

Whilst no sure bets, I would put my house on Chelsea playing in the CL three or four more times than Leicester in the next five years. With Chelsea chucking in a huge payrise, Kante is probably betting on the same.

 

Of course he wouldn't. But it shows you can't begrudge anyone at that stage.

 

If he's only staying one additional year, I don't know if it makes a contract extension more or less likely. Less likely, I think.

Tadic will get paid more for a season which is good for him, bad for Saints. But he may find it harder to leave as the price Saints will demand is going to be higher with him tied down long term, which is bad for him good for Saints. So maybe that breaks out neutral overall.

But if Tadic is hurt or plays poorly next year he will have the security of a long-term deal. Conversely, Saints would now be stuck in a long-term deal with a player they can no longer sell so I think that makes Saints a little less likely to sign him if the plan is that he leaves (or Saints plan to move on).

Of course there are other factors, and any issues can between the sides can be mitigated by more/less years or more/less money.

 

Agreed, but there are various reasons why Rickie wouldn't have taken the Chinese money. 1] It wasn't around in such abundance. 2] He's English. I'll make a huge generalisation here and say that the English are more often inward looking, and Europeans are more often outward looking. Hence, Rickie wouldn't go, if presented with the opportunity, but Graziano did.

Rickie wasn't to know that he was being prised from Saints just to temporarily weaken us. Actually, it was cheaply done. It opened the door for the others too. I'm sure he was well paid to sit and do nothing but train.

£20m for Tadic, I'd sell him tomorrow, anything less and we should keep him. He's good but replaceable with the money we can charge for his services. I'm not worried if anybody goes, there's always someone out there that wants their job, and can do it.
As long as we can continue to recruit well, we can continue to sell when the money is right.
