http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-36807333 Scroll down to fake tweets. Btw 3 days later full media coverage and collective mourning over Nice. Less than 3 weeks ago a terrorist attack killed 41 ppl iirc and 200+ injured in Istanbul. Sterile reporting and no collective wallowing in the press. It seems we're all equal... but some are more equal than others.
I'd noticed a shed load of "missing" tweets that all seemed to be teenagers in selfie mode..first thought was are ALL these real? Second thought...God I hope not. Hmmm. Collective Mourning is a little harsh me thinks..whole hash tags and French flag light shows won't solve any issues and some may jump on the solidarity bandwagon but I believe the general feeling of horror and sympathy is genuine. As for the more equal than others...that's a little simplistic. It suggests racism rather than more empathy with people's we (general we) share more culturally with.. Also I would see it as an assumption and distance thing...Turkey on the border with an active war zone..long running battle with the Kurd's who carried it out. Lumped in with a whole region at war. It was the same when bombs were going off in Iraq..just seen as part of life in a conflict area. Yes it doesn't compute on a more detailed look since France is involved in that same conflict arena. But then emotional response isn't logical. This is (or is believed) to be the same enemy that threatens us and has attacked us in similar ways. Empathy more likely in that scenario.
My mate with his Mrs and his 3 +1 year old are going around Europe in a motorhome atm I texted him lastnnight + tried to call this morn but no response Im sure all is well, Europe is a big place. They had no plan but to start in Holland and take it from there lastinng for 3 weeks 2 and a bit weeks into their journey
Note though Frank, I wasn't aiming it at the general public. I aimed it squarely at the media and politicians. So imo it's not created by emotions, but the media trying to set the tone with a mildly sychophantic approach towards France which creates that emotion. Some of the pictures are designed for just that. The dead body of a girl, covered, lying with a doll next to it being one such example. Social media then kicks off and away we go. None of this is to belittle the tragedies in France btw, but I feel the media tone is patronising sometimes. I don't think the media reported like this during the Northern Ireland troubles despite some of the tragedies on our doorstep.
I think the difference here , and this applies also to PKK attacks in Turkey , is that it was a long standing problem which regularly had spasms of "physical force" republicanism not an attempt to destroy "western" society. and the media has changed considerably in the last 10 years
No worries...wasn'the sure if you meant media and collective as same thing...get you now. So yeah I agree on that. Do think the targets have a bearing on obviously the reaction which was hoped for. Nightclubs...Concert, Family Celebration etc it's targeting the "joy" of western life. Also think online has changed the immediacy of events like this. Good and Bad...(as you pointed out with rumour passed as fact etc)..although I'd argue social media has changed the tone of media reporting rather than other way round...they try to compete with immediate reaction...much more analysis rather than reporting events...not a great change I feel. Yeah I almost used us as an example but again I think other than Omagh Bombing etc people just "expected" violence on a weekly basis over here...so maybe comparable to Turkey in a story life span. But it's all a cycle...we can't really stop this kind of act and we know it...this palava is us "doing something" in an uncontrollable situation.
the isrealis have basically decimated lebanon ever few years but it doesn't stop the rockets being launched in to the place. there's no real way to just blow syria off the map for france to stop this. they can only resolve issues within france but i'll predict a right wing government will end up blowing the hell out of syria.
Somewhere someone's master plan will have worked then. Btw why the **** does it say I'm ignoring posts by you??? I don't have anyone on ignore.
Last day in Nice and it's been an incredible experience. Still vibrant and buzzing even after what has happened. Beautiful city and will be returning.
