So basically rhe turkish army arent answerable the govt. They instead honour thw principles of Ata Turk.
By staging a coup, they aim to remove Erdogan cos he keeps trying to impose a lot of Islamist rules; press censorship, reduced rights for women etc.
The army will probably try to install a secular leader as they have done the last few times theres bin a coup.
This could be a good thing for Turkey...provided the air force aren't called into start air strikes.

Thing is, lots of ****wits in Turkey are devoted supporters of Erdogan. The secular constitution has been violated relentlessly by Erdogan but I'd say a significant portion of the Turkish population are either apathetic or supportive of this as they don't give a **** about secularism.

It's similar to how the Russians crave a Tsar; the Turks crave a Sultan.

Yep always a good idea to use a military coup to preserve democracy <doh>

Democracy isn't just something we abide by when it suits us. You use democracy to preserve democracy otherwise you never move forward. If he's been elected leader then the country deserve what they've elected and it's their ****ing problem until someone comes along to offer them something better they can vote for. It takes generations for a democracy to evolve into something greater, not some repetitive miltary coup every 19 years ffs <ok>

That only works if the crackpot they've voted in allows democracy to exist thereafter. In a lot of these cases, a coup de gras is the only way to get rid. Yhe only problem is youre then stuck with the military

Jesus wept, talk about tarring everyone with the same brush...

That's as far as I'm going, this thread's getting locked, it's inevitable, and I can't be arsed to have an argument stopped in the middle.
