Seems as if most people expect the country to remain in the single market with some compromise of free movement according to research by the BBC. The question was asked, just what does Brexit mean? It has not been defined yet, and no one seems to be in a hurry to do so. Hollande is in a hurry to know what the UK intends, so he is going to have an emergency meeting with the Germans and Italians in six weeks time! We are in the holiday season after all.
What I think many of you seem to forget is that many of the Brexit voters were people living in despair because they believe that they are missing out on the benefits of the EU. As far as they are concerned jobs for bankers in London and the state of universities in the UK are nothing to do with them. I suspect that many of them thought that they had nothing to lose and all the 'experts' didn't give a s**t about them, so why not stuff the experts up by doing something that would upset them. In that situation many people look for someone to blame. If Brexit doesn't work they will find someone else to blame. The first lot will be the politicians who negotiated the exit and there will be populist politicians who will exploit that. I find it interesting, in a Machiavellian sense, that Farage has walked away at this stage of the proceedings. He is probably hoping that he will be called back from the wilderness to sort everything out..
I think you are correct - it seems in many countries that the "Establishment" has lost sight of real people and there is a backlash. Unfortunately what those people do not realise is that any harm done will be - as in 2008 -harm that affects the poorest most. Services will be cut further, austerity will roll on longer and the rich will continue to be able to surf any storm. - sorry perhaps I should have ended that "the smart" will make opportunities. ( as poor must of course = ignorant )
When the Tory led coalition rescued the country from the financial mess the LabourParty had got us in 2010 we had similar predictions of doom and gloom with high unemployment. In fact over 2 million jobs were created, low inflation, low interest rates. A million new businesses were created. The Tories should concentrate on giving everybody the chance to be 'smart' and improve their lives.
Let's face it there is always collateral..... and if the Tories really cared about the poor they would have invested in them years ago.... all ... words.... like making young poor white kids 'pay' to go to University so they can never get smart. Clearly that policy is NOT working as now we discover that working class white boys are the lowest % at Universities etc etc They talk the talk as we have seen... like our friend on here... all strap lines.... no real change. However I am willing to see if this time May can do it and put some of those egotists and narcissists in their place ( ) ... if you get my drift .....
I happen to believe that the Conservatives are much better at handling the economy than Labour. I forget who said it but she indicated that some people called them the Nasty Party. The fact is that the Tories are prepared to sacrifice people in the short term to achieve economic goals - take your mediciine as it will make you better. Labour struggle to do that as they cannot resist spending money for their "good" causes. This is different. We have deliberately crashed the car. Not the Tories but the country as a whole - Cameron was simply the tool (pun intended) who set the referendum going - but half the popuation wanted Out -and that half won. We have elected to leave amotorway and drive on back roads - it can be done -but anyone who thinks it is a smoother route than we were on is crazy.
Not sure who ever is supposed to have said this. University education policy seems to have been set by Labour - Blair (?) - who wanted to match other countries high % of people going to Uni. So we pushed people into Uni doing crass subjects like media studues to bump up the numbers. Never mind that they were not academic subjects and led to no jobs. The cost of so many going to Uni meant the old system of grants had to go and loans came in -and then fees. One day we will wake up to the reality that it is not all about Uni. Youngsters should be given the best training in what they have most aptitude at. So now we at last have returned to Apprenticeships more. It does not matter if you are technical, academic, sporty or whatever - the training on offer should be tailored - not straightjacketing people into what Society deems "better"
Correct My youngest daughter did media studies, waste of time, the lecturers hardly turned up. She now has a 2.1 and a £40k debt whilst working in a different field that did not need a degree. I doubt this debt will ever be paid off.
Youngsters of course do need "smart" parents for guidance. My children did law, economics, management and psychology- not a camera degree nor a media studies there - oh and are all now considering moving their talents abroad.
All children are different. My eldest daughter runs a multi million pound business employing over 50 people, my second daughter sets up major deals in the NHS, both doing extremely well in the UK. The eldest one started out in life as a nurse and the second daughter's first job was selling wallpaper so it proves there are many opportunities in life if you want to take them.
FTSE 100, where most pensions are invested, has risen to its highest position for almost a year. Sterling not far off pre referendum level even with a predicted interest rate cut. The scaremongers need to work a bit harder.
The pound has stabilized a little because the markets now know that nothing is going to happen immediately - once article 50 is actually invoked (if ever) this will change rapidly. Would you answer me one question ? Britain has failed to control non EU. immigration - why would they have any more success in controlling it from the EU., and why should Europe take this 'control of borders thing seriously' from Britain ? Does it not make you ashamed to know that Poles find it easier to integrate into German society than into Britain - bearing in mind that the Poles suffered more, proportionally, in World War 2 than any other country ?
The main issue is not the exact level of immigration but who has control of it, we say it should be the UK government to decide on the required level.
Helps when you have a rich father - or did your daughter build up her multi million pound business from scratch on her own? It goes to show how money goes to money You really do not understand economics and finance at all do you? Probably not compound interest either. All we are seeing now is speculation and reaction to uncertainty. As the shock news is absorbed markets and to an extent currencies settle - albeit sterling looks to be settling rather a lot lower which helps stocks slightly. The bad news is long term. A weaker pound causes imports to be more expensive and helps drive up inflationary pressures. When tariffs alter our exports will be harder to achieve and the economy will slow. Slower growth will cause less employment, higher unemployment and a poorer country. It happens over years not days.
Wrong again, My daughter and I built the business from scratch, her excellent product knowledge and my financial experience setting up and running several businesses over the previous 20 years. For somebody that knows nothing about economics and finance I seem to have been remarkably lucky.!! A temporary weaker pound does cause import costs to rise but makes our exports more competitive. Tariffs may hit our exports but imports will also be hit so foreign cars less attractive. From experience suppliers selling to the UK and shipping companies adjust their prices downwards to remain competitive. Personally I have ordered the same large amounts of stock from the Far East at varies rates of 2.1 USD/£ down to 1.45 USD /£. Trade just finds a way to continue. The government would actually prefer to increase inflation, the ideal target is 2% so a long way to go yet. You have also forgotten the thousands of small / medium companies that do not export but are hampered by unnecessary red tape from Brussels, hopefully a lot of this costly nonsense will be cut.
But there's more going on in the world than that. Following Brexit, HP and Dell increase prices in UK HP has announced today that it will also be raising its prices by 10% in the UK in response to Brexit. According to Ars Technica, "Dell was the first major IT firm out of the blocks to respond to the weak and uncertain pound, announcing a 10 percent increase of its own last week, after Sterling hit a 31-year low against the dollar. The pound has recovered slightly this week, but at around $1.33 per £1, British currency is still in a sorry state — and big American companies aren't taking this lying down." The Chinese company OnePlus has also raised the price of its OnePlus 3 smartphone by 6.5%. Reports have also emerged that Lenovo and Cisco are considering raising their prices — Cisco has been said to be mulling over a 14% price hike. In HP's email to its partners today, it says the price hike will go into effect on August 1. It continues: "This applies to all HP commercial/business products in the HP Personal Systems category (core PC/laptop, value technology and mobility solutions)."
I guess the narcissist is posting his chest beating egotism again I guess people like him will always find a way to take advantage..... of whom????
BBC diplomatic correspondent James Robbins says new Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson was booed by some guests as he spoke at the Bastille Day reception at the French ambassador's residence tonight. James Robbins says it wasn't clear if the booing was from British or French guests, or both.
Yes saw it on the news... how on earth we can expect such a joker to represent the UK worldwide is beyond me..........
