They run trips from Brisbane to the Great Barrier Reef and it's three times as far. People will always travel to something they can't see anywhere else.

And who ever got excited about going to Brisbane on holiday?

That's my point - people piss their pants about Vegas and then the thing they enjoy the most is 300 miles away. Nobody ever said "wahey, I'm off to Brisbane on holiday", talked about Brisbane all the time and then said the best part about Brisbane was the Great Barrier Reef.

We have German and Italian cruise ships that visit Southampton that run day trips to London, Bath, Stonehenge and one or two do Stratford on Avon.

The difference between the USA and here is about the concept of distance. We were staying in Ashville NC and one local attraction was white water rafting. We booked paid by card. It was only when we had a good look at the directions, that we realised that it was 115 miles to the junction off the freeway and then a few more to the rafting centre. I would not dream of driving that sort of distance to do the same here.

and if you went there would you say the best part about Brisbane is the Great Barrier Reef?

    No, because you'd look stupid.

I don't know, it depends how good the Great Barrier Reef was.

I'm maybe not the best person to ask about this, I've been to Vegas four times and I've never been to the Grand Canyon, so I obviously wouldn't say it was the best thing about Vegas.

If the Great Barrier Reef was amazing - as I imagine it is - you'd say it was the best part of Australia. You wouldnt say it was the best part about Brisbane if it's 1000 miles away.

Don't know about that. Stopped off in the Cotswolds a few times on the way back from New Forest and Devon. One very independent, retired, lady from America was travelling around, had been to London, Oxford, Scotland and was on her way to Liverpool to the home of the Beatles and then to Ireland. She loved the
Scottish scenery and was so taken with the Cotswolds she had altered her travel plans to spend extra time there.
She lives lived an hour's drive from the Rockies. Another American couple said they could happily live in the
Cotswolds. They were from San Diego.
Amazing how many Americans you come across in the Cotswolds. And Japanese and Koreans.EspeciallyBourton on The Water, somewhere I could quite happily live.
Everyone sees things from a different perspective when visiting somewhere to what the locals do.

I went to the Barrier Reef from Cairns and did not rate it at all.
We are going to Dubai and Mauritius later in the year.

I think that's the key thing, perspective is everything.

I've spent time in the Rockies (both Canadian and US) and absolutely love it there, I'd move out there in an instant if it were possible. However if my work told me I had to move to the Lakes or the North of Scotland I'd be looking for a new job. That's not to say I don't like those places, I just wouldn't want to live there, I imagine there are North Americans that would say the exact opposite.

I went to Dubai on business for a week last year. I thought I would hate it, I just thought it would be like Vegas, but it's much more charming and I really enjoyed it. You'll do well to find beer cheaper than £7 a pint, mind - I bought a round for a large group of business contacts and it nearly wiped me out!

How can the Grand Canyon be the best thing about Vegas? Its in a different state ffs. People just enjoy visiting it when they are there because of the relative proximity.

Did someone just hit that small metal fastening device somewhere near its summit?

An american friend of mine and his family had a weeks holiday in London, when I asked them what the best part of the holiday was they said the trip to Brighton. How can London be so great when the thing they enjoyed most is 60 miles away?

You just referenced 1 family. Literally everyone I know who has been to Vegas and coupled it with a trip to TGC has said the latter is the highlight.

    FACT.

Maybe more accurate to say the best thing about visiting Vegas is the chance to visit the Grand Canyon? After all, 300 miles a short trip when you have travelled over 5,000 miles in the first place. A bit like the best thing about travelling to London is the opportunity to travel a couple of hundred miles to another county to see the delights of Hull.

As it is on we of the natural wonders of the world that is hardly surprising.

It doesn't surprise me, that wasn't your point though, you suggested the best thing about Vegas was the Grand Canyon 300 miles away.

What you've actually just proven is that when people visit both they prefer the Grand Canyon, thats an entirely different point (and one I agree with).

If someone said "I went on holiday to the Grand Canyon and it was amazing" then that makes perfect sense. What annoys me is they say they're going to Vegas and then say the best part was something 300 miles away.
