I just hope that we apply common sense to the negotiation and stop throwing numbers around for the sake of breaking records. Also, if he really doesn't want to come and waiting for Madrid to come for him, I would not even touch him with a yard stick. Only get players that absolutely want to play for us.
You can't argue with that. That we shouldn't just throw money around just for the sake of it. And we shouldn't get a player who's not keen to play for us. But otherwise if he is the player that Jose wants and feels is the key part in his system and he is keen to come back, then I can't see why not. With the ridiculously inflated prices of good (not great) players being bandied about, what is the price that most of you think Pogba is worth? Is it £45m or more like £60m? For me United will always pay a higher price for their players. Even more if we want to take away a player that their club is relcutant to sell. If everyone is in agreement that Pogba is worth at least £50m+ then United will have to pay up to £100m to get him. Yes, that's the ridiculous world we live in.
No to a no brainer. Your club must be mad. Look what we payed for Mahrez, Kànte & Vardy. 70 mill is crazy money for him imo.
I am surprised that United (and any of the other so called top clubs) haven't bid for him. He's worth at least £40-50m!
I'm not sure that I understand your logic here, Christian. If fair value of a player is £50m, then we have to be prepared to pay £100m? Based on what exactly? You've literally doubled the fee. We're not talking £15m to £25m but you want to overpay by £50m? If we start running the club in this irresponsible manner, then I think we need to give up the idea that there would be any of the club left for us to support in 5-10 years. Many clubs have been forever ruined due to this arrogance of paying way over the odds.
In United's case right now, that won't happen. We're not Portsmouth, we've got the money. I agree though, it's a ludicrous attitude to have. What's he worth? We'll pay double. It's laughable. I reckon he's worth 50 million, tops. Even then it's ****ing ridiculous.
He does, but then a lot of people also made a lot of sense when they said exactly the same last summer about Martial. Whereas Kagawa was a double Bundesliga winning footballer of the season bargain. Without a crystal ball, you can make a claim any player is over or under priced, but unless Suarez has suddenly become available, apologised to Evra, and declared his love for all things Utd, Petit's alternative doesn't really hold any water. £100m is a lot, and more than we probably should pay, but unless we plan to be Arsenal and sit on our cash and count our profits from 4th place, then it's hard to dismiss Pogba without a better value alternative imo.
Suarez was an example, not literally him. The point he was making was for £100m you're looking for someone like a Suarez that you're more likely (never guaranteed, but proven more likely) to move the team and squad forward significantly. I still stick with my point on page 1. Spending £100m on an obvious name is lazy. And there's far too much of it going on at too many clubs and it's failing. The difference with Martial wasn't simply about the amount we spent on him, it was the fact that he was clearly someone that our scouts or somebody within the club had done their homework on. It wasnt a lazy signing. In short if you're going to splash the cash, either spend a ridiculous amount on someone who is one of the top handfull of players and therefore a shoe in for immediate success, OR spend a porportionately less ridiculous amount on a player you've done your homework on and unearth a real gem. Pogba doesn't fit either of those.
This is a logic which I don't agree with necessarily. This is United's logic as the purchasing club not mine. 1. Their club Juventus does not want to sell (or so it says) and the player has a long contract. 2. United is bidding against another very rich club (or it seems) 3. United hasn't got any CL football next year. 4. United are not champions and not even top 4 challengers for the title last year. 5. United are able to splash out the money and it makes commercial sense to Woodward and Co who may think they can recoup a huge proportion of that outlay. 6. Juventus recognise the commercial value of the player. Do we remeber Beckham being sold to Real for £25m? yes, he was "worth" that amount in footballing terms. But in commercial terms he was worth at least £50m - £60m ! So all the above inflate the price of the palyer IF we really wanted him. Now if Jose really wants him and instruct Woodward to get him, I can see the player being bought for that huge sum. Yes, it is mad, crazy and shouldn't happen but it wll.
In the right midfield role, I can see why Jose might think he is indeed that. A player with physical strength as well as the talent. As for Martial, it is interesting that most fans on here were aghast at the money spent (including you ) And to be fair it did set a precedent for potential. I had argued against most here that if we were going to get the best players we had buy potential and young potential now and in future will cost as much as the older finished article.
I disagree with you there. He is in the top handful of midfielders in the world imo, and as I have said before better than anyone we have. And will also add something different from our other CMs, thus giving us more tactical options, which is Mourinho's main requirement for success. Also, at the age of 23, he has significant potential to develop more in future. Admittedly, the risk and expectations will only rise higher as the fee gets inflated, but I would rather take that risk than do what SAF did for the past five years of his reign, insist there is no value in the market, and see the squad get gradually hollowed out as a result.
Lots of rumours about Man Utd being after Fabregas - could it be a power play to force the Pogba transfer or is it a legit transfer?
Very much hope it's the latter. imo Fabregas is exactly the type of player we shouldn't be after. Even leaving aside the attitude and consistency problems, he's no better than what we already have in CM. We don't need more players who are similar to what we have, we need better quality players if we are to move forwards.
