EXCLUSIVE: Warnock confident QPR can complete deal for Puncheon

Southampton winger set for a move to west London

Neil Warnock is confident QPR will wrap up a deal for Southampton’s Jason Puncheon in the coming days – and says the versatile winger is ideally suited for the Rs.

Rangers have had a bid accepted for 25-year-old Puncheon, with centre-back Kaspars Gorkss set to move in the opposite direction as part of the deal.

Puncheon, who can play on either wing or just behind the striker, impressed while on loan with Blackpool in the Premier League last campaign, but has not been given a squad number with the Saints this season and favours a return to top-flight football.

Warnock is also set to wrap up a deal for DJ Campbell by the end of this week, and wants to make Puncheon his next signing after missing out on Wayne Routledge, who has agreed terms with fellow Premier League new boys Swansea City.

“We need a wide player, obviously Wayne Routledge looks like joining Swansea, and we’ve been looking at Jason Puncheon,” Warnock told London24. “He’s someone who has done really well, he’s exactly the sort of player I like, he’s pacy and direct, someone with something to prove, a player with a bit of hunger, we need players like that at QPR this season. He’s a player we’ve been looking at, so now we need to see what happens in the next 10 days or so.”

As well as a winger, Warnock added that he is in the market for a defender, with Manchester City’s Nedum Onuoha potentially available on a loan move.

“We’re still looking and we have a couple more targets,” added the manager. “I’d say we need another defender, not necessarily a wing-back but certainly a defender to make up the numbers.”

If Gorkss goes, I really am getting concerned about our defensive frailities...

TBF, we did a deal like this with the Wurzels last year, that didn't work out too bad!

he is quoted here that we need another defender to add to what we have not to replace anyone i feel

Agreed. I just can't work this one out. Judging by responses over the past few months, most of us rate Gorkssie not only potentially prem-able but also our best CB (Gabbidon or not).

What's the point of wing cover that leaves a deep hole at the core of our defence?

I could take the thought of yet another maverick but not at the cost of a settled and reasonably reliable battler like Gorkss.

Did a quick Google on IWIT, Northolt, and came up with Irish Wolfhound Internet Trust! I've gone off the rails there, haven't I...?

Why, may I ask ? Is NW letting Kaspars Gorkss go, after all the time the club took to get him! I am not a football manager, would not want to be, but what is ours doing? I can not see the logic in this act!. Please inform me? Puncheon , I do not know a lot about, but if he was that good why have not other clubs gone after him?? We seem to get or went all the over the hill players, some who never made it to the top! There I go again, let NW sort it out thats what he gets paid for! Down to the beach now, bad day on Monday as we had a real thunderstorm, great fun!

I have no idea why we're letting Gorkss go. I'd say if we got rid of him and took Puncheon, we'd be less ready for the league than we are now. We're in more need of definsive numbers. Although Gorkss is a bit slow, he makes up for that in great positioning.

Furthermore, Gorkss will probably be hearing about these rumours and it's probably a bit unfair. If the deal doesn't go through and he stays, it might effect him.

He must be agreeing to this surely. They can't force him down there...

It seems there are some strong negative opinions across the MBs on this player, I think I only noticed him a couple of times on MOTD and he looked all right.
I swear sometimes people just jump on a negative bandwagon.

Puncheon looked good I thought last season at Blackpool, pace and striking ability. I would put that in the 'good signing' box.

Not sure about Gorkss going the other way. Maybe NW thinks with Gabbidon / The Ram and maybe Webber / Onuha (spelling) he has enough?

One things for sure, injuries apart I reckon Fitz will be starting most games.

    Curious reporting methinks

I think us fans give Fitz too much stick, yes he was awful in the first season we got him and some of us haven't forgot that but when him an big dan came back last season they were sensational and Fitz showed that injury permitting he can be a regular first teamer

One Size is also prone to hamstring and groin injuries and doesn't win half as many headers as he should do - bear in mind his height and size. Personally, I would rather keep Gorkss and hope he turns Saints down

Lots of people saying "Why are we letting Gorkks go", but few seem to ask "Why would HE want to go?". He can't be forced out, unless NW has told him he ain't going to get a game. This is all rather peculiar.

If you had made it to the top as a key part of a team, would you want to go without even giving it a shot?
