Mario Gotze would be a fantastic signing. A tough time at Bayern, but poch could get the best out of him. He's the sort of player that would really improve us going forward, especially as we're going to look to qualify for the CL again this season. Having played at the highest level, that bit of experience will be hugely beneficial to our other young lads.

however, it probably won't happen. <laugh>

My thoughts exactly when I heard the rumour. Nice, but I doubt it would happen. I think Gotze would be the player we hoped Holtby would be for us. If it happened, of course.

The frustrating thing is that he'll probably be leaving Bayern. But we'll just get outbid, and left behind with our wage offer, as he's a big name. There'll be a few clubs sniffing and I can't see Levy paying what will be required.

It would be a great statement of intent. I'd be especially irked if he ended up at Liverpool or another one of the non-CL EPL teams.

I've just had a look on google and have no idea if this is accurate or not, but it states that he earns approx £115,000 a week. - if true, that'd be an issue for us. And as you say, he could end up as Liverpool, as they will pay it.

Gotze would be a hell of a signing though, even just as a statement of intent. Like VdV but a bigger deal.

I wonder what we would do with 115,000 a week......? Never having had money it kind of makes me want to throw up.

1/6d to get in and players on 12 quid during the season and 10quid in the summer.Haven't things changed? (maybe not even 1/6d!)

An even better transfer story has emerged: negotiations are under way for Fazio to head to Barcelona

I forever hope for another VdV (a technically superb top flight player - seen as surplus by his club - happy
to take some degree of wage cut to be part of a new CL adventure for an aspiring club etc) .

With 115K per week, you could do all that and still have change to buy a bag of peanuts at HT.

Gotza's in the last year of his contract and Bayern's CEO has publicly said he should go, which hardly bolsters their negotiating position.

Gotze's a good player and I suppose it would send out a good message if we signed him, but it's a position that we're overloaded in already.
Seems a bit weird if we've targeted him specifically, as Bild seem to be saying.
Their latest claim is that we met with his father twice during the Euros and that it's between us and Dortmund for him.

Dortmund makes sense what with Mykhartian off to United. Liverpool and ourselves are already well stocked in that position so I don't see what either would gain from signing him unless the fee is a VDV no-brainer.

I personally don't see the '3' as in any way needing a bit of tinkering. Son and Clinton need a proper season to prove themselves, and I still harbour hopes that Pritch can break through and play a role in the 1st team. With Chadli seemingly staying put, that's already 7 players for 3 positions. Once the Jansenn deal is done (it's gone worryingly quiet on that front) I'd set my sights on signing an improved Mason-Carroll hybrid, a CM with a bit of bite, eye for goal but can also thread an intricate pass when necessary. We currently only have two settings on our tempo spectrum: 'Villas-Boas' and 'Gung-ho'. It would be nice to have a player who can sit deep and mix things up a little when the opposition have the measure of us.

I very much doubt this will happen. However, he's a top player and at least as good as anything we have in that position and better than most. I'd sell Chadli, Son, N'Jie, my mother, sisters and my least favourite daughter to bring him to the club. Okay, not both sisters.

Whilst I tend to agree with you, I think Gotze at his best would improve us and give Eriksen some more direct competition for his place as CAM. I think most of our other current contenders work better on the flanks.

As far as the CM position, I think Alli has shown potential for that role in the absence of Dembele, but I agree, we still haven't replaced Modric.

Who do you reckon would be a good addition for that role? What do you think about the Wijnaldum rumours?

I don't see anything wrong with having Gotze coming into the current set up.

As lock stock said, that's some direct competition for Eriksen. There's been times over the last couple of years where Eriksen has looked like he needs someone there to keep him on his toes.

There's enough competitions we'll be part of next season to keep a possible 6 players happy in the "3", but with whom we already have available, you'd have to think that 1 of them would be on their way of there's any truth to the Gotze rumors.

Personally I don't get the hype over wijnaldum. Especially for £25m. I don't feel he'd be adding any value to our squad. I think a lot of the positive opinions about him are based on having a decent season on fantasy football!

He's got outstanding credentials - winning champions league & the Bundesliga so his pedigree is there for all to see.
I'd love him at the Lane it would show a real statement of intent from Deadly Dan
If we have to move on someone so be it that's what champions do.
