Could well do - Pontius Pilate is believed to have been born in Fortingall, Perthshire.

Much to the annoyance of the Church of Scotland, no doubt...

Well that was pretty comfortable for Hamilton.

The rain at the start caused him most issues.

Rosberg 2nd but might lose that over an issue with radio comminucation.

Typical isn't it - you wait 77 years and then two come in quick succession

If Heather Watson had lost, here she would have been called a Sarnian, now she'll be called a Channel Islander. In the British media, she'll be called British instead of a Channel Islander.
Does that sound vaguely familiar? :)

The only option is Independence Barry! ;)

I was very pleased for her and her partner ... both genuinely happy and a first for each country.....

There's a train of thought which believes that, if Andy Murray keeps on playing, from around 2018 he'll be referred to as Scottish when he loses and European when he wins. :)

The Scots - and maybe Channel Islanders - need to lose their chips. The British media selling to British audiences describe British sportsmen as British. Find me examples of where Muurray is only called a Scot when he loses. Does anyone notice that a certain Englishman called Lewis Hamilton is also always referred to as British.

YouGov have been tracking the public's perception of him since 2011 when he was defeated by Djokovic in the Australian Open - at which point he was deemed Scottish 60:30 with 10 undecided. The latest poll, only last week, and coincidentally on his way to the Wimbledon final, showed 52:35 with 13 undecided. The graph of the results since 2011 showed three clear spikes - when he won Olympic gold (48:43), when he won Wimbledon in 2013 (45:45) and when he declared for the Yes campaign (55:35). So yes, the view exists.

Have you ever noticed how a certain Scot called Nicola Sturgeon is never referred to as British?

Well that would be silly as she defines herself by the party she leads. It is not the British National Party - please exclude Scotland :)

On the subject of Andy Murray's supposed lack of humour - I think he does rather well in this...

Leo, please note that my first observation was how the Jersey media views a sportsperson from Guernsey - it was like that when Le Saux and Le Tissier were still playing. The only exception was Andy Priaulx (former World Touring Car Champion) when his career was on the wane. Also, I think that a more accurate comparison for us is with IoM rather than Scotland, and the British media have given their top sportsman a nickname that recognises where he is from. I actually have less of an issue with the British media regarding their calling those from here British as there are so few successful sportspeople from the islands. That is more of an issue, there is talent here but there is little attention paid to it.

Surely Russia will be banned from the Olympics after the powerful report accusing then of state sponsored drug taking?

    More British winners today?

Froome in Le Tour and maybe the cricketers to gain revenge on Pakistan?
