They won't have it, nor accept that there insistence on it being about immigration, despite voters telling them otherwise, is a big part of the problem.

If you point out the obvious fallacy in their claim that all (or most) racists voted leave, they disappear into a world where they change the topic to blowing smoker up each others arses.

For me that's the point. I don't believe that Pete represents the vast majority of the leave voters. I know it's only a small sample, but many people I know, personally voted out, but wouldn't dream of either the actions being reported or comments made.
