Echo article stating that Saints are trying to avoid the transfer frenzy engendered by the cash swirling around in the EPL. Whether this article is based on familiarity with SFC or by an off the record interview is unclear. It is wise that we don't get dragged into overpaying, but inevitable that we will pay more than expected. Top clubs will pay daft prices for 'superstars' because that is the only way they know how to operate i.e. throw money at the problem....the problem being that middle-sized clubs can now compete in the league. We will inevitably get affected by the price rises, but this can be mitigated by the fact that there are more players at the level we operate at than there are 'must have' superstars. It is all a question of balance...only time will tell if Saints are getting it right. It's going to be a long summer with much gnashing of teeth.

Still no solid transfer news... understandable; but still frustrating...

 

Transfers have been held up by Euro 2016. There will be further delays if more clubs are chasing the same players...agents and clubs will hold back if they are hopeful a better deal may come along. Always difficult to buy in a volatile market if you are not prepared to blow people out of the water....which we obviously are not. I think we can abandon all hope of early deals.

 

European internationals on holiday, Silly early money banded about (when later in window teams will want to cut squad sizes) and manager only in post a week or so meant that it was never likely to be an active start to this window.

 

Morning Fran; agreed. The management, including CP, seem happy to keep a low profile; excited about what we source for next season in terms of players and positions covered...

 

Interested, but not sure how exciting it will be. Suspect we will sign people who are a mystery to most of us...so we will have to wait until the season opens to see how brilliant they are I always need regular inoculations with signings...every new player keeps me happy for a few days, then the twitching starts again. Same every year.

 

It's been ages since we signed anyone. Aren't we due another one or at least some itk posts?

The influence of Claude is already being felt. Saints need a chef de partie no less.

 

Most people seem to agree that the Echo are the club's unofficial mouthpiece so I think it's fair to assume from this article that we are being prepped for 'don't get too excited about any incoming transfers in the next few weeks' but also when Saints do don't expect too many big money signings. They note how some big money signings didn't make the grade but fail to mention the smaller money signings that were also useless.

It's a gamble that has worked well for some time, let us hope it still does but I think with this model mounting a continued challenge on the top four clubs season after season is a long way off, if ever.

 

Uncle Les initially said targets would be brought in prior to the Euros. The managerial situation obviously put pay to that but I would have hoped that the moment a new manager came in that we would be back to pursuing our targets and getting them over the line ASAP...

 

He and Ron also said we don't need a lot.

 

On a net-effect basis we need 2 more than we needed when they said that...
