One of five siblings, I was born in the south of England during the 1820s
As a teenager I found work as a bricklayer, helping to build major roads and London train stations
I suffered just one defeat as a professional sportsman, and one of my contests almost ended in a full-scale riot
I was a heavy drinker, and this combined with diabetes and tuberculosis led to death before my 40th year

One of four siblings, I was born in London during the late 1920s
I was evacuated to Somerset during WW2, and it was here that I began to act and sing on stage at village halls
I received numerous nominations for major acting awards over a forty year period; I was championed by Laurence Olivier; and I appeared in an episode of Star Trek
I suffered from drug addiction and once petitioned a UK prime minister not to further criminalise cannabis use

I was born in the Soviet Union during the late 1920s
Before becoming a writer and member of the Communist Party, I worked as a carpenter, painter, and concrete worker at hydroelectric power plants
I defected to the UK after my early novels, mainly based on real-life experiences, were criticised for their anti-Soviet content
In later life my work was often published under a pseudonym, and I worked for Radio Liberty

One of six siblings, I was born in the northeast of England during the first decade of the 1900s
My father recognised my talent for recitation and would take me around by horse and carriage to practise and compete
I often lost out on roles for not being ‘pretty enough’, yet I received an Oscar nomination and appeared in some of the most acclaimed films of the 30s and 40s
A road in my hometown is named after me; I received an OBE and damehood; and I was the subject of a This Is Your Life episode

With Scottish ancestry, I was born in the USA during the last decade of the 1800s
In order to boost the family’s income, I worked at a slaughterhouse, a bicycle chain factory, and as a construction worker
I appeared in films with the likes of Bogart and Bacall; I was once listed in the Guinness Book of Records; and my song-writing royalties brought in up $300,000 per year during the 60s
I was known for my expensive tastes in food, wine and clothes, and I was often out on the town with Fred Astaire and Duke Ellington

The child of an army major, I was born in the southeast of England during the WW2 years
As a child, I attended a Catholic boarding school, and it was here that I developed an interest in acting, though I was once rejected by a drama school for being too tall
My one and only scene for a Carry On film was never used, but I went on to appear in the some of the most popular sitcoms of all time, winning a BAFTA for one
I have been appointed both OBE and CBE, and I once held the position of High Sheriff for my home county

Aberdeen, Aberdeen canny kick a jelly bean <party>

I didn't think the link was Morecambe and Wise to be honest. That was one of your harder quizzes, I doubt anybody else would have managed to get it correct to be honest
