The problem is that we just haven't got a captain. Good luck to Rafa on that one. I will back him whoever he decides is best. All the suggestions on here have big pluses and big minuses
Yes he has proven he is not captain material! A liability on the pitch and when he can be bothered! He hasn't been bothered for years. What a captain he would be!
Actually he performed well when wearing the armband. If it's a choice between him or Lascelles only an incompetent idiot would choose a player that's totally inexperienced and unproven mate. Anyway I already indicated I'd choose krul or Colback
Why do you keep saying he's totally inexperienced and unproven? He's already had 2 full seasons (4 in total) in the championship, and made the step up to premiership. If he was a youth team player with a handful of appearances you'd have a point, but he's got nearly 100 senior appearances in his career to date! Krul would be a ridiculous choice and Colback is not vocal enough and needs to get back to being good before he's considered.
If we are going to chose a young defender it should probably be Mbemba. Not afraid to put his body on the line, Although he isnt the most vocal. We are not privy to what happens everyday on the training ground, when player eat and travel together. Rafa is and will pick the best candidate. Lascelles is everyones choice because he was chosen to do some PR work and interviewed relatively well, but does this translate to being a good captain, im not sure. I wouldnt begrudge him it. Captaincy can wait, get a great Pre-season under our belts. Sort out whose staying/going/coming in and then a week or so before our first game, start thinking seriously about who will lead this team.
He's totally unproven sorry it takes a bit more than a handful of good games before you get the armband. He's done nothing don't be so fickle because if he has a couple of bad games the same arseholes will be booing. Krul is experienced and a good role model Colbacks main asset is he gives 100% and like I say he will do well in the fizzy. Both have experience and know the club. There's no many options but I'm not on the Lascelles is God bandwagon yet. Its too soon to even know who's going to be in the team too Anyway Rafa will choose not us and I'll be right
Captain has to be a senior player in the squad really, if Sissoko remains and commits to the season then I would expect him to take the role, if not then Rafa has a big decision to make, I could see him going to Colback for this.
Being a coach I have personally stripped a 30+ year old of the captaincy last year and gave it to a 17 year old who smashed it and lead our reserve team to the Semi final of a cup and had a decent run in the league. Nothing to do with age. As others have said there have been younger captains at higher levels and he IS experienced in the Championship, in-fact he is probably our MOST experienced player at this level and it was "proven" last year, even without the armband, that he will stand up and give the older lads a dose of the truth if he needs to. Didn't see Tiote, Sissoko, Wijnaldum, Colback or any of the older lads standing up to be counted or coming to face the cameras when it was all going to **** last year. Krul and Colback I can see the appeal of though, been at the club a while but Colback isn't guaranteed to start and Krul is a GK so not for me. Agree with this though. Rafa probably has something up his sleeve that none of us have even considered.
I do agree, age is a number and if someone shows there good enough, then its enough. I love the fact that Fernando Torres used to captain Athletico Madris at the age of 21, then when he rejoined he was being managed by Diego Simone, a player he used to captain!
He is unproven as a captain. Those seasons I'm sure Forest were down around 10th-15th. Hardly proven at the level, nobody else was willing to take the plunge on him and Darlow despite having a look. If he'd stood out as one of the better players in the league then they would have. He has only played 15 PL games, probably only successfully in 2 thirds of them. I like him but he is not really proven at either Championship or PL level to be perfectly honest. He has potential. Its an almighty leap to then say "you know what, he isn't proven and he's only 22 but we'll make him captain" To be honest while I'm not massively against it, it looks a pretty backward decision based on all known evidence. Indeed lets be honest, he is only in the discussion because the club has been so poorly run and the squad so poorly built. Someone looking from the outside would think "well that is a risky/stupid decision" I couldn't crib any recommendation people are making, we have a glaring hole. People are talking about him being a natural choice or head and shoulders the best candidate though. That is crazy talk.
Well my choosing Lascelles was qualified with 'if he's seen a first choice CB'. And if he is then I don't think making him captain is much of risk given what we know about him. What we have lacked in the past few years is somebody vocal on the pitch and he is certainly that. If we are bringing someone else in to start alongside Mbemba then obviously that answers the question as to whether Rafa thinks he's that good a player. If he's not ready, then it would be Wijnaldum for me if experience is key; I'd just tell him he's staying.
For Me Aiden Flint, He is the new captain. Joining Nufc Today/Tomorrow, got a good scoring record too! 90 Games, 20 Goals
I don't know the player but Wiki says he's not captain at Bristol so are you sure he is up to the job?
