Not sure about this one, OFH. What is it? Has it gone? Was it ever there? Aren't there spasmodic outbreaks of something like it in random places at different times? Insofar as it exists at all there's some evidence it flourishes in smaller rural communities in the UK but it's perhaps harder to identify in some urban and suburban areas. Probably not totally different from France if my recent experience of city suburbs in Paris and Montpellier is anything to go by!
Just been given a date for my second knee replacement op - 10th August. No trip to Southampton for the season opener for me - won't even be able to watch online...
I was actually thinking firstly about the Tour and how it is estimated that between 2-3 million people turn out to watch it flash by every year. Certainly the turnout in Paris for the final day is quite amazing. There are more things though that attract people to come together. 14th July sees celebrations all over the country, small events in the rural areas, but some far larger ones in the cities. New Year brings round some large scale celebrations all over the country. Frequently commune arranged events that are well supported, rather than private parties. With every organization from the local football clubs, through the blood donors, to the local hunt having their different dinners and dances throughout the year, inviting the local populations, there is always something you can go to if you wish. I think that something did exist once in England thinking back to my younger days, and you can find comments from the communities that lived in the slum conditions in London and the northern towns about how when they had their nice new homes they actually lost their sense of belonging. What I have noticed since I left my village in Northants is how little is happening there compared to when I first went there in the 1970's. It is now twice the size, but cannot even find enough people to take all the nine seats on the Parish Council.
At least it will be done and over with in decent weather. I have finally got an 'initial' apt with the Spinal Assessment Team here.. for September
Morning all from a cloudy Jersey. Our recent weather means that we're either going to get rain or brilliant sunshine. I know this should be on the other sports thread, but I couldn't believe it when I saw that Middlesex beat the Yorkies by an innings on their own patch - shame it was Scarborough instead of Headingley.
Morning all, bright sunshine here and a very warm day expected. Not going to get a lot done as I am taking Mme into town this morning for some tests. The hospital prescribed some pills when she was bitten by a tic several years ago, and took her off them a month ago. They are now going to see what the results are. As far as I can tell she has not missed them at all. This afternoon three granddaughters are coming round now that school is finished until September and our daughter is wanting to get more work done on the house they are restoring. Not easy with three girls wanting attention.
Watched a local forecast here around 9 and they said dry but cloudy all day - five minutes later it was drizzling.
A headteacher I knew met an ex-pupil who had gone on to work at the Met Office back in the 60s. Full of enthusiasm for his new job the lad said they had so much technology they could now tell what the weather was like without even looking out of the window. The head, not renowned for his wit, replied, "Indeed...I thought that was how you always did it." Using the old techniques, I'd say it was dull and cloudy here but Mrs H's slightly rheumatic knee and the cows still standing suggest no rain is imminent!
