Won't be going to jail though as its just under 2 years, which is helpful. He might fancy a way out his spanish hell. I can feel Pep readying a bid as I type.

Yeah, but would you do it for a ~1.5% pay rise? Because that's all he got out of it.

no one escapes the tax man

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-36721892

Argentina and Barcelona footballer Lionel Messi has been sentenced to 21 months in prison for tax fraud.

His father, Jorge Messi, was also given a jail term for defrauding Spain of €4.1m (£3.5m; $4.5m) between 2007 and 2009.

They also face millions of euros in fines for using tax havens in Belize and Uruguay to conceal earnings from image rights.

However, neither man is expected to serve time in jail.

Under the Spanish system, prison terms of under two years can be served under probation.

the comnon man would be jailed though for the amount of tax avoidance

If this had been a normal bloke they'd have gone to prison.
Messi gets paid a fortune and still tries to fiddle the tax man. I don't buy [sic] the excuse that he didn't know.

Joke sentence. They had no intention of sending him to jail. Trying to scare other celebs from tax frauds.

I expect that the conditions of the probation style sentencing is he is not allowed to leave the country.

Expect his retirement from international football had something to do with it.
