Probably right. These sorts of sentences are usually suspended. What cock though, all that money and the greedy ****er doesn't pay his taxes.

He's already paid them back what was due, this is nothing more than the equivalent of nailing a crow to a farm gate.

For those of you who remember the Lester Piggot trial? If I remember correctly, he got 3 years for persistently lying to the tax people even after he was caught red handed.

In those days, one of the regulars in my local was a high court judge. He criticized the judge in the trial for sending Piggot down. He said to me, 'it's plainly obvious what's important to this man - money! I would have fined him £3mill and given him a suspended sentence"

I think the judge in Messi's case should have done the same. Hit the ****er where it's most important to him - his wallet!....

"However, neither man is expected to serve time in jail.

Under the Spanish system, prison terms of under two years can be served under probation."

    Naive.

Suspended 21 months Prison sentence is WAY more than any stupid Fine money

Ex: Mascherano accepted a one-year suspended prison sentence and a fine of 816,000 euros
    816K Euros <<<<< 1 year Prison
Let me spell it out - Javier earns zillions in 1 year than the peanuts 816K Euros he paid as fine. <doh>

That's why he should have been given a proportionate fine. Not a slap on the wrist.

    All clear now?....

    <ok>

I have read stories about IRS locking up people who missed few thousand dollars in their returns.

These are people who earn mid five figure sums per year not week.
Statutes are like "up to Million dollar in Penalty" for missing / false returns.
So the upper limit is enforced on Average Joes & Uber rich - talk about level playing <doh>

    System is broken.

Ain't that the truth. If you or I didn't pay our income tax, HMRC would come down like a ton of bricks over a few grand. If however you're Starbucks, Google or Amazon then they seem quite happy to not to pursue the millions that the exchequer misses out in corporation tax
