Established regular defender for Watford, who had a good defensive record in the Prem, expensive yes, but certainly a decent signing and got a gamble with someone from a foreign league. Would he drop down a division though? Maybe, with the constant revolving managers and instability at Watford and the likelihood of going straight back up with us. £7m isn't ridiculous, given Palace are thinking of spending £31m on ****ing Benteke.
He's a decent defender for the price when you consider some of the crazy price tags around. You have to laugh at Pardew though - £31 million for Benteke is just ridiculous. It's like he's making up for not having money to spend with us. Perhaps signings like this one are the reason why? He got Townsend fairplay, but splashing out a fortune on Benteke and Wickham last season is just crazy.
As I say fees have gone crackers with the influx of money. 7m Cathcart and 10m for Tomkins? Yes ok if you compare it to some of the other silly transfers then its the going rate. I'm simply pointing out the going rate is now beyond what is acceptable. The way the clubs are using the money is just adding to this already out of control monster. More should be invested elsewhere rather than this crackpot saturation of the transfer market.
Well said mate. Having said that though in the current crazy market £7M seems well decent for Cathcart. I would be very happy with that
He was never great, but he showed glimpses. A fair few of us always thought he would be best deployed as a right back or right wing back, so all depends what McClaren does with him. I mean Allardyce.
He's going to be our right back. For me, that is definitely his best position and a monumental improvement on Billy Jones! If Sam can get the best out of him then I reckon we have a bargain for 4 million.
I was annoyed when he left us. Much better than what we had to replace him in my opinion. Should do well for you boys as long as you're looking for an attacking full back. His defensive positioning and cross stopping can be a bit questionable.
Depends what you are after SAFC83. He is not great defensively and lets be honest, is a complete pussy who is pretty injury prone. However he can be decent going forward and he can pretty silky in possession. I think if you put him in a top 6 side he'd probably look decent. The problem with us as it will probably be wit you, the lad isn't a fighter so maybe not suited to mid table-relegation battles. Surprised Sam hasn't gone for Yedlin. I'm not sure what to make of him and all my mackem mates seem split over his ability.
Santon was yet another example of Ashley's ****ty money grabbing, he was popular over and a first team regular, yet he was forced off to Inter so a few million could quickly be made, leaving us with Haidara and Dummett as replacements! He's good, but doesn't track back to well and isn't particularly physical....he won't fit in with Allardyce's usual bunch of hoofers and carthorses anyway.
To be fair this was entirely down to Carver by all accounts - nothing to do with Pardew or MA. I know they are popular scapegoats but Carver made it clear he didn't fancy him, and decided he prefered Haidara/Dummett. Santon wasn't happy with the situation and wanted to leave. I can understand that from Santon, he is a way better left back than both of those two. As much as Santon has professed to prefering left back, I still reckon he is a right back personally.
Would anyone here take him back if he wanted a move to the north east? Him and Jesus as our full backs would be alright. Dummett, Anita, Sterry and Mbabu as cover. Get rid of Haidara! Dummet can cover CB along with the other one (whoever that may be) we are supposedly getting in.
No, I probably wouldn't, but, I'm a great believer that players should never go back, unless they're of exceptional quality, and he doesn't fall into that category.
He'd be a good option to be honest but I'm not keen on players going back. Like Heed unless you are Beardo quality, I'm not sure it ever works. He did have genuine affection for the club which is hard to buy.
