I forgot how joyful it was finishing above West Ham last season! That was a trophy for me. I don't even dislike them - was just an amazing feat, given their season, and our two clubs' recent history.

 

I've never even heard of him tbh.

I guess that Saints were monitoring him though.

 

Saints (and every PL team really) should have knowledge/data/stats/video on any player playing in a major league. Puel comes in, says "oh yeah this guy I rate and think we could do with him" the scouts/coaches/whoever else is part of the transfer committee trot off to the black box room and load up the info they have on the player and make a decision.

 

In my post I deleted the last four words. They were... via the Black Box.

 

I understand, but my point was more that we don't monitor specific players. We monitor every player so that when we decide we need a new player we can just go along to our database and filter through using whatever criteria we want to find the sort of player we need. Likewise if a new coach/manager/scout comes in and has a player they think highly of then we can look at all the data we have gathered and make an informed decision. I would be pretty surprised if this sort of method is not how it works at the vast majority of top flight clubs.

 

Yes, I understand also. However, my understanding is that the Black Box method is unique to Saints. Certainly the people who have been allowed a glimpse at it say that it is the first time anyone has ever seen something so advanced and comprehensive. And these are observations from people inside football.

 

Bertrand rumour to Liverpool still won't go away

 

Certainly won't if you keep posting about it.

 

Bertrand to Liverpool makes sense, they need a LB and their scouting seems to be "oh we need a new player at LB, who have Southampton got?"

 

It also makes more sense for Saints to keep Bertrand.

 

Yes but as we have seen in the last 3 seasons every player has their price and if Liverpool match it then they will get Bertrand, whether or not they will is another matter.

 

There you go, keep on answering. Let's stop NOW.

 

Bertrand has 3 years left on his deal, so he wouldn't be sold unless he refuses to ever play for us again if we didn't let him move. Even then, like Vic and Schneiderlin, I'd think we'd make him stay.

 

Bertrand may have learned from his time at Chelsea that bigger isn't always better. Let's hope anyway.
