I'm not a huge fan of Shepherd Neame, but their Kentish strong ale isn't bad, although a tad strong; Belgian beer strong!
Little Johnny meets Donald Trump Donald Trump was visiting a primary school in Orlando and visited a grade four class. They were in the middle of a discussion related to words and their meanings. The teacher asked Mr.Trump if he would like to lead the discussion on the word 'tragedy.' So our illustrious Republican candidate asked the class for an example of a 'tragedy'. One little boy stood up and offered: "If my best friend, who lives on a farm, is playing in the field and a tractor runs him over and kills him, that would be a tragedy." "No," said Trump, "that would be an accident." A little girl raised her hand: "If a school bus carrying 50 children drove off a cliff, killing everyone, that would be a tragedy." "I'm afraid not," explained Trump. "That's what we would call a great loss." The room went silent. No other child volunteered. Trump searched the room. "Isn't there someone here who can give me an example of a tragedy?" Finally at the back of the room, Little Johnny raised his hand. The teacher held her breath. In a quiet voice he said: "If the plane carrying you was struck by a 'friendly fire' missile and blown to smithereens that would be a tragedy." "Fantastic!" exclaimed Trump, "That's right. And can you tell me why that would be a tragedy?" "Well," says Johnny, "It has to be a tragedy, because it sure as hell wouldn't be a great loss... and you can bet your sweet ass it wouldn't be an accident either!" The teacher left the room..
Just so that you don't feel you've been ignored, I'll reply. I like Shepard Neame beers a lot, but they are not my favourite. Tbh, these days, I'm not sure what my favourite is, there are so many that are so good. Ringwood, Flowerpots, Hogshead, Wadsworth, St Austell Ales, etc... In years gone by it would have been an easy choice. Wadworth's Old Timer, on draught. Don't bother from the bottle, it's a poor imitation of the real thing. Only available after October and phased out after winter. But I never go into pubs during the winter these days, so I never drink it now. Besides, not every pub keeps it. But it was fantastic, and if the pub had run out, the evening was always a tad less enjoyable, despite the fact that Wadsworth brew lovely alternative beers. OT is said by reviewers to have a strong malty taste. But that's rubbish simplification. Yes, the base flavour was malty, but so much depended upon how young the barrel was. A new barrel pint would actually have a strong flavour of blackberries over the top. As the beer gradually lowered in the barrel, it went through many different phases of flavour. Quite incredible.
They were showing on BBC West today how a local artist has produced over the last 3 years 19,240 effigies about 6 inches high of all the British soldiers killed on July 1st 1916 on the first day. He then sowed each one by hand into a shroud. It took 8 soldiers and 3 lorries to transport them to a memorial service where they were laid out in a huge area. It was so moving to see the expanse of space the whole display took up, and the figures were only 6 inches high. BBC West have also been tweeting one name of the fallen from the region every 2 minutes. It will take over 9 hours to complete the list. From one day of one battle, staggering..
Kindle people (and book people generally) - if you like a murder romp through 1950's Russia (and who doesn't), I highly recommend Child 44.
I've got that and the other three in the set. I'll add it to my huge to be read pile... Thanks for the recommendation.
