Liverpool will have done well to get £30 million for Benteke. Though I think he'd do well in Pardews system to be fair.

The biggest problem with that system is Pardew himself. I still don't really rate him.

I know this is a bit Eeyore and consequently very annoying for a majority of the posters but I am finding it very hard to get excited about any players we may sign for this season.

I kept coming back to the Forum for news and rumours on the manager but the players leave me cold. You know anyone who turns up and is really good will leave after about two seasons and if they get near contract renewal they won't sign any offer given them no matter what.

It just leaves me cold and I know it happens to other clubs but I still think that players come to us and are thinking who they can impress to get their 'big move' from day one.

From a football perspective I find this depressing, with regards to every day normal life it doesn't affect me at all - so it isn't an over reaction just a football reaction. If that make sense?

I know we haven't had luck with the managers either but that doesn't seem to bother me as much.

True, they're bound to go 3 months without winning a game at some point. <laugh> But with Bolasie, Puncheon and Townsend putting in crosses in the box he may do alright for them if he does decide to move.

Did the same not happen with Palace last year? - spent a lot and brought in a lot of 'quality', pundits really rating them - and look what happened!

Will this kick start a merry-go-round of doom?

Yup, know what you mean. Its because we pay considerably less than other top 6 clubs. Always will be unless we break our wage structure/cap.

Forster is on a reported £85,000 a week with his new contract, which I think is a pretty decent wage limit to go by if true. To be honest even if we met the wages other clubs offer, say if we did with Sadio, they'd all most certainly move to the "bigger" club regardless.

Wow didn't realise that. Only 3 years ago our top earners were on 55k

Just going by what has been quoted! Would imagine Fonte is on that or similar too. Don't know if Beefy or anyone can back these numbers up at all? <laugh>

I don't know the newer deals yet. Last I was told was Fonte was our highest earner on £80k.

And that's a significant part of the problem! To counter "the big clubs" we need to offer +20% what they're offering to keep / get the best players & £85k just won't do it. Not arguing for / against; that's just the way it is.

This time last year we were all talking about the exciting signings Newcastle were making.

    Just saying...

Belgium were chock full of what most would regard as "quality signings" last night. Wales were bolstered by a load of also rans yet I know who I'd rather support if they were club sides. The size of the fee and associated paycheck is never a guarantee of success.
