I think English man should be England manager.
Sven-Göran Eriksson was not a success apart from being a womaniser.

since bobby robson SF world cup and pen loss. 1990

    .......................

Graham Taylor Euro embaressment, failed to get to 1994 world cup
    Terry Venables 1996 European Championship – semi-final
Glenn Hoddle woulrd cup first knockouts. beckham card. 3-2 loss.
    Howard Wilkinson interim uslessness
Kevin Keegan 2000 European Championship – group stage - disaster
    Peter Taylor interim
    Sven-Göran Eriksson 2002 World Cup – quarter-final, 2004 European Championship – quarter-final (our level?)
    2006 World Cup – quarter-final
Steve McClaren 2008 European Championship – failed to qualify - USELESS
Fabio Capello 2008–2012 2010 World Cup – second round - disappointing loss.
    Stuart Pearce interim
Roy Hodgson 2012 European Championship – quarter-final, 2014 World Cup – group stage 2016 European Championship – Round of 16

the record shows that eriksson actually did best of all. the record also hides the absolute dullness of hodgson.

The fact is theres two foreign on this list and the rest english... the records is at best mixed.

Venables was a good tournament, we all enjoyed it. there was a clear plan in his head for that tournament
    Keegan. diaster at euros.
McClaren was a nightmare. could not set up a defence. has struggled everywhere since
    Hodgson... easy groups then ****e.

the reality is we are talking fat sam next... no thanks.

I think we just need a olid team and a guy who picks in form fit players in thier best positions.

Wenger will be found wanting in tournaments. The players will be bottlers. His speeches at half time won't arouse the passion.

If not Big Sam, then a pairing of Southgate/Hoddle to take on England, with Southgate to step down and Hoddle to take over the job he was unjustly sacked from. Hoddle has unfinished business to complete.

After our last 2 managers have been the highest paid in the world the next one should be on a sensible wage. Bonuses can be paid if they actually do well.

Hoddle was decent for England, but has been poor in club management since. His time has gone.

The England managers job is a poisoned challis and is no job for a man who still has ambitions in the league game,

    Requirements.

Able to manage and command the respect of top stars/prima-donnas
Still up to date with modern tactics and formations..
Able to play against many different styles.
Able to pick a cohesive team not just the best players.
Knowledgeable about the full pool of players he has to select from not just those he has seen on TV.
Sees it as his last job and wants to go out remembered as a top manager not just after his pension.

When the job comes to an end the managers career is usually finished because he either wins something (all dependant on a limited pool of players) or he is a failure, there is no "well done" in this job unfortunately.

    I totally agree.

    1. the media have a very sizable part that is just hateful and spiteful and thats why the players basically crapped themselves the moment iceland equalized.... you could see it in them. there is no pulling behind the cause or everyone coming together to improve. Its Sabre rattle during quali, play the god save the queen card then savage in the finals and scape goat.

    2. I agree with your basic requirements.

    3. I would add real attention to detail and ability to communicate an individual plan to the dimmest of players. An international manager has 3 months to get ready for one or two games. He should have a VERY clear game plan built ready for 3/4 days max with his chosen few. setting up for that one game is crucial.

    4. I agree it should be the last job for someone.

Sven-Goran Eriksson says he would manage England again

Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson says he would love to come back to help the national side.
Eriksson, 68, previously led England to three consecutive tournament quarter-finals, losing to Brazil at the 2002 World Cup and against Portugal at Euro 2004 and again in the 2006 World Cup.
Eriksson, who is is currently manager of Chinese Super League team Guangzhou R&F, would be willing to replace Roy Hodgson, who resigned following the Three Lions’ shock 2-1 defeat to Iceland in the last 16 at Euro 2016.
