I rate him, I always have, I also defended his and McGregors calamities when the criticism was out of proportion. Mac is 1, Jak is 2, nothing has changed; that's goalkeeping for you.
If I had to choose Mac would be number 1. But what about rotating them, keep them both sharp? (cue pencil-sharpener joke) Anyway, what if Kuciak's better than them both?
He was shocking in the Swansea cup game. Trying to dither and take people on leading to him losing the ball to Routledge I think it was, who missed the open goal, fortunately. It does my head in that so often people say, as Canada has above, that he's underrated because of one game against Wednesday. That was his first and most famous gaff, but he's done it loads of times since. Later that very same week he threw another cross into his own net away at Orient. He gave Wanyama that beautiful assist last season by slicing a kick up the middle of the pitch while stood in the corner of his area. It seems like because the Wednesday one was so bad people forget anything else he does. Perversely he seems to have admonished himself of any criticism for future errors because they can't be as bad as the first one. Agree with this entirely. He was decent in the playoffs when called upon. He's a very likeable player and our longest serving one.
And it does MY head in when people on here talk about Jaks "loads ofmistakes (you quote three examples) and have complete amnesia about the innumerable horrendous errors that McGregor made in our last relegation season, the fumbling of weak shots into his own net, the punching out of shots directly to the feet of opposing forwards for simple tap ins, the positioning errors such as the first Arsenal Cup-Final goal when they were 2-0 down, the awful clearance under no pressure against Lokeren, far worse than Jaks hurried clearance from Brady's awful and unnecessary back pass. McGregor made a similar clearance to Jak's "Wanyama goal" the following week but the recipient missed, but no mention of that. How many points did McGregors errors cost us in our last relegation season? McGregor has a major problem with long shots. Seems unable to pick up their flight. That's why we gave up more goals to long range efforts from outside the box than any other team in the Prem. McGregors errors have been far worse and more costly than anything Jak has produced.
Couldn't agree less with this. Jak's mistakes are historically more frequent considering the lack of game time compared to McGregor. McGregor has also been largely at fault for things as well, but there's a clear first choice out of the two, far and away. Regardless we need a new keeper and we're not going to get one.
And yet kept a CS against Swansea. That Southampton example is one of the weakest arguments I've ever seen, and the frequency it gets repeated is alarming. He sliced a clearance to a player basically standing on the halfway line, who had more chance of missing than scoring. The fact he scored was a credit to him, not a folly by Jak. A week later a similar clearance was made in another game I was watching, and the player the ball fell to got it nowhere near the goal.
We all know McGregor has made some mistakes, the only difference is that nobody's on here claiming that McGregor only ever made one mistake.
Probably because McGregor has made a lot more in the much larger sample of games he has played in. Jak has one clear cut absolute howler to his name. He has several other brain fades where he looked below par. McGregor has made more than one clear cut absolute howler.
McGregor currently has over 80% of the votes to be our No.1. People in Australia and Canada think it should be Jakupovic. You figure it out,..
Sorry, I misunderstood, I though you were saying McGregor made more mistakes than Jakupovic, I didn't realise you were agreeing that he doesn't. As you were.
McGregor has made more mistakes than Jak. He has also played more games than Jak. The correlation is hardly shocking. That observation does not contain within it my suggestion that Jak be our number one. In fact on the previous page I actually clarified exactly that. You cannot deny though that Jak has a better record against the big clubs than McGregor.
He's barely played against any big clubs, so there's not much to go on, he was brilliant against Arsenal away, did well against Leicester at home and shipped four each against Arsenal at home and Man City away. He's been fine, his allround game just isn't as good as McGregor's, which is what the thread's about.
He also kept a clean sheet at Anfield in 15/16, and did well against Spurs in the Cup in our first season up (Sigurdsson's worldy is pretty tough to blame him for). I never argued that McGregor isn't more consistent than Jak, I don't know why you're putting words in my mouth. My case was from the start that Jak has shown a higher ceiling in the big games.
I'm with the Canadians and Aussies on this one, I think he's earnt a run in the shirt. If the old Jak on a hot tin roof comes back in the Prem then it's easy enough to change the keeper. I like a keeper with a bit of personality and a shot stopper, I also don't agree with the criticism of him punching balls away, when the balls move so much in the air it's better to get distance rather than try to catch everything in the modern game, years ago I would have agreed.
I honestly can't see why anyone thinks Mac is better than Jak, I don't care what the poll on here says.
Jak is a poor keeper with the ability to have one off good games. Even when he is having a good game his best saves are still made with questionable technique. He seems like a great guy and he really cares. But If you know anything about goalkeeping, it's clear he's not good enough to be a championship number 1 never mind prem. I'm astounded he was given another deal
The bigger question for me, is what do we do with Kuciak? He was quite obviously signed with intention of releasing Jakupovic, presumably he'll go out on loan somewhere now that's changed.
