Compared to Lille, we offer both.

If we signed him that would also partially answer the question of why we constantly sell players. If we were to get him ahead of Arsenal and Chelsea it would be by promising him more game time. When he's played for us for a year or two, feels he's proved himself and can get into the first team at a bigger club he'll be off.

That's the way it is. Rather sign him for 2-3 seasons and him to move on to a CL club, then bring in old veteran because he won't leave the club in a heartbeat. He'll see us as a stepping stone, and I'm ok with that.

We could well be a CL club in that time , it's not that unrealistic.

other than us playing the cup goalie card, it's either our bench or theirs. I imagine theirs pays better.

Do you know if it's true that we've offered a deal to McGovern?

Arsenal's probably the bigger threat. I wouldn't want to be a talented but rough around the edges attacking mid in Chelsea's squad right now, though; won't be many minutes to go around next season.

Will just go out on loan on massive wages for a couple of years, and if he doesn't make the grade get sold on. If Arsenal and Chelsea are interested then can't see him coming here

Sure, though the wages that they'd give to a player they plan to loan out wouldn't exactly reach six figures. Spending a couple seasons in flux before being sold on isn't always a net positive for your pay packet compared to going somewhere at a somewhat lower salary before getting a truly big money move.

Let me think this through. Do I want to go to a second tier selling club for 2 years on lower wages with the hope of getting picked up by Arsenal or Chelsea or do I want to go straight to Arsenal or Chelsea now?

Playing Devils Advocate here but that is the reality of our business model. Everyone on here is saying it so that's what people on the outside are thinking. Don't even bother with the 'playing time' argument because as we've all seen, when the cheque book comes out the players will be off and our accountants will be high five-ing.

Yeah I don't get the whole "well if I develop for a couple of years then I could get the move later" argument. If a big team wants you now, you take it now, no guarantee that they will want you again later down the line for a whole host of reasons.

What we can offer for a likely key first-team player and what Arsenal/Chelsea will offer for a squad player isn't that massive a differential, though. Somewhat substantial, sure, but they won't be offering double or triple what we can.

Many (most?) would make that choice but the other choice is hardly unheard of. Clyne was pretty up front that he was doing exactly that when he signed for us.
