Your comments made me think of a quote ........... ( from the papers )

The Leave campaign is fond of a quote attributed to Churchill: "Each time we have to choose between Europe and the open sea, we shall always choose the open sea."

    What Johnson wrote:

"I cannot stress too much that Britain is part of Europe, and always will be.
"There will still be intense and intensifying European co-operation and partnership in a huge number of fields: the arts, the sciences, the universities, and on improving the environment.
"EU citizens living in this country will have their rights fully protected, and the same goes for British citizens living in the EU.
"British people will still be able to go and work in the EU; to live; to travel; to study; to buy homes and to settle down. As the German equivalent of the CBI - the BDI - has very sensibly reminded us, there will continue to be free trade, and access to the single market.
"The only change - and it will not come in any great rush - is that the UK will extricate itself from the EU's extraordinary and opaque system of legislation: the vast and growing corpus of law enacted by a European Court of Justice from which there can be no appeal."

The only point I would highlight is his comments on the rights of British to live, travel and work in the EU. I don't think anybody would expect this to be a one way street if it happens, freedom of movement from the EU would also have to be maintained. And I honestly don't believe that is what a lot of Leave voters thought they were voting for - I certainly thought that 'control of our borders' was a non negotiable element of the Leave promise. I would be interested to hear what the Leave voters on here think of this vision. To be honest I would be happy with it, in the context of where we stand now having decided to leave [I should also stress that my personal entirely negative opinion of Johnson stands firm]

Of course, as far as I know, Boris is only talking for himself, and this may be a decent platform for him to get the support of the majority of pro Remain Tory MPs.

Farage has to be involved - I would leave it entirely to the Leave campaigners to do the negotiations. Then when the deal is done there can be no accusations of sell out - and no one can play the De Valera role. It will just go on and on otherwise, with them saying "true independence" has not been acheived

Do you think so? How depressing. It's bad enough with some of the others but I really don't want Farage representing me in any negotiation. He has already said that only those who voted leave are 'decent people'. Perhaps we will be saved by the fact that his only personal mandate is as an MEP.

It sounds very much like Johnson is now trying to sound statesman like and moderate and reasonable enough to capture the support of many Tory Remain MP's and with them take over from Cameron as PM. He has no power now to make these promises garanteeing the single market and free movement as he did this morning. Very different as well from what he was spouting during the Campaign. Sure I much prefer the idea of the UK staying in the single market with free movement of people. But Johnson seems to say what is covenient for him, not what he really thinks -don't trust him an inch. I suspect his real views are further to the right than Farage.

My views on Johnson are well documented on here Jock. He is a liar (sacked twice for lying) and an opportunist. I actually have no idea where he stands on the political spectrum. He can't offer any promises in what will be a negotiation which he may not even be part of, but at least he has got the ball rolling in terms of giving the country something to discuss, which is what I have been asking for.

£ now lower than its lowest point on Friday, $1.32 and €1.20. For the purposes of tourism, £1 = €1. However, I do think this is just mindless markets, we will know the true levels in a few weeks, after several hedge funds have gone bust (as a few small ones have already, for not factoring in Brexit). I am reading $1.20, sometime in August. Which would be good for exports and tourism, if not inflation. I hope we don't throw cash into the mix to prop up sterling, though we may have to if the big banks come under more pressure, their shares are certainly taking a hammering, along with property and airlines.

Angela Eagle hang your ugly head in shame!
This is the woman who shouted across at PMQ's accusing the Tory's of not being loyal and how Jeremy Corbyn was the man to lead the labour party. Not a voter of Corbyn but respect his stance and views.
    Politicians make me sick.

Cameron handling himself quite well in the Commons, though no hint of an apology for running a **** campaign, and only one real answer to all the very self serving questions from a variety of MPs ' the new government will have to decide on that'.

Corbyn uses the occassion to turn on his own MPs, first time I've seen that in the Commons.

    Johnson, apparently, hasn't turned up.

If you are interested in the UK economy, have a look at the FTSE 250, which is more reflective of our domestic economy than the FTSE 100 (which has lots of multinationals reporting their profits earned abroad in sterling, they should see them go up with exchange rate changes - about 75% of all the earnings from the FTSE 100 companies is overseas). The 250 isn't a pretty sight at the moment, down over 13% from Friday morning.

we are still above the year low in the markets of 5500 but we dont want 4 consecutive negative days in the market as that can be a trigger for greater sell offs as institutions will look to reduce risk in their pension funds that are already underfunded

The leaders of Germany, France and Italy have said they will not hold any informal talks with the UK until it triggers Article 50.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel hosted talks with French President Francois Hollande and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi in Berlin.

The leaders called for a "new impulse" in strengthening the EU.

What tosh. The fact that Tories in the Remain camp exaggerated the risks does not mitigate the stupidity and xenophobia of those who readilly believed the lies put out by Brexit. You really must be blinkered if you think that.

How can it not be. Do you really want to close your eyes to the fact that the areas which voted most strongly for the UK to leave were the ones which had the largest number of EU migrant workers? No doubt some may well have genuinely held a simple principled view about democracy and taking back control from an unelected buraucracy but the tide undoubtedly shifted when Brexit realised that simply rubbishing any independent voice as biased, in the pocket of Cameron and/or how simply dare you, wtf has it got to with you wasn't persuading us that it was worth jumping into the unknown. That was the moment when they resorted to plan B and focused on immigration and raised the spectre of 75 million Turks waiting to cross the Channel. As the tactic worked, the message became louder and less based in fact as opposed to whipping up xenophobic hysteria. I hope you are not going to deny that.

Public cynicism at immigration number estimations has been rising since a Labour Government predicted 13,000 coming in after Poland's accession, and over a million arrived. The issue for most is simply numbers, not xenophobia

Well, two things have made me smile today.

Diane Abbott as shadow Health Secretary. Thought she was better suited for Shadow Chancellor myself.

BBC West Midlands interviewing people from ethnic backgrounds in Handsworth about racist incidents post Brexit. Turns out they all voted Leave, and want rid of those pesky Europeans.
