A player from France...... good old Carr.......

Free agent Cheikh M’Bengue has confirmed that Newcastle United have made an approach for him.

Turning 28 in July, the left-back will be out of contract at the end of June and is considering his options.

Declining to sign a new contract at Rennes who finished eighth in Ligue 1 last season, Cheikh M’Bengue says he isn’t ready to decide on his next club just yet but won’t leave it too long.

Though born in France, the defender elected to play for Senegal and has 11 caps, though it is almost a year since his last one.

Cheikh M’Bengue came up through the ranks at Toulouse with Moussa Sissoko, leaving for Rennes for around £1.5m in summer of 2013, some six months after Sissoko joined Newcastle.

As well as interest from Newcastle, the player claims that St.Etienne and Sunderland are amongst a host of clubs to have made advances this summer.

Cheikh M’Bengue as quoted by the Shields Gazette:

“It is true that I have a little attraction to the English league and the German championship.

“But there is also the reality of the market, supply and demand. I’m not focused on these championships.

“If I have something that fits me where the offer is interesting, why not, I am open to many things.

“Many clubs have approached me. St. Etienne asked me and there is also Sunderland, clubs in Turkey, Newcastle – I will leave it a little time but not too long.

Tempting to leap for joy that we are after left back, but is he any better than Haidara (not difficult) or Dummett (not difficult)? If so great but is there nothing a bit closer to home who can hit the ground running?

Surely its about time Carr was pensioned off if he is still sticking to this policy of never travelling more than 30 miles from the French Eurostar terminal to look at a foreign player. FFS

Apparently we are pensioning him off as soon as we invoke Article 50. His target market will be gone.
