Actually someone posted that we were the 5th largest economy in the world to which you replied "6th. France went above us when the pound tanked." which isn't true because we were only for 15 minutes due to volatile currency movements in a position where it could even be argued that we had dropped below France. Currently that isn't the case.

Martin Schulz wants Britain to start negotiating the exit by Tuesday.

No surprise the banks are in a hurry to get their own exit plans in place.

It is up to our government when to begin negotiations regardless of the varying opinions of different politicians across Europe.

If a sentence starts with the word "actually" it has to be read in a Brummie accent.

The pound will tank a bit more this week so, actually, the U.K. will drop to 6th again.

@line 1 - that made me go back and read my comment in a Brummie accent <laugh> <ok>

@line 2 - you're throwing out an opinion without even looking at what kind of changes in both the value of gbp and the euro would be needed for that to occur.

Let's string them along, it will definitely help us get the deal that won't completely **** up the economy.

It's the arrogance of the Little Englanders that's going to screw the UK. We're really not as important as some think.

Yes we are, 100% in the driving seat in terms of when negotiations begin as per the EUs own rules.

You said that there was a 'first mover advantage'. The advantage would depend on the specific trade conditions, not who moves first. Leaving the EU means that we're likely to be at the 'back of the queue' as the US have indicated and won't have the clout of the trading bloc agreements that the US and Asian markets prefer.

The quote you cite could well come to fruition, as the Independent says 'given the smaller size of the UK market, it would have less negotiating power in talks with the US than the EU.'

The rationale I've read on here so far from the Brexit supporters regarding the negative effects on the economy is 'it hasn't happened yet, so it wont' happen'. It's like saying 'I'm alive today, so I'm never going to die'. Complete denial.

Second paragraph: my post was a passable impression of a Custard comment. Brummie accent included.

Well Merkel seems to think there is no rush to force us into negotiations, there are mixed opinions amongst different European politicians. It isn't going to massively effect the outcome one way or another by waiting to invoke article 50, especially when we have immediately made it clear when they can expect it to happen.

We're really not as unimportant as others think.

When it comes to when the UK triggers Article 50, the rest of the EU aren't even in the car.

    I hope they do.

The referendum is advisory. The government could choose to ignore it if they feel it's not in the country's best interest. With the jocks and the Irish trying to block it and the consequence of coming out meaning the break up of the U.K. It could and should be deemed as being against the best interest of the country.

Read somewhere today that a labour mp is also looking into trying to get parliament to reject the referendum.

So we drag it out against their wishes.

We go to the table in two years and say "basically we think your club is **** but if we can't trade with your club then we're ****ed so here are our demands".

    I'm sure they'll bend over!

As far as I'm aware there doesn't need to be a vote in parliament and the PM can himself trigger the exit process, however that doesn't mean whoever the new PM is in October won't choose to pass it through parliament first.
