I really like her. She's about the only decent left of centre party leader out there. If she'd born 90 miles further south she'd probably make a good labour leader.
This is a complete clap-trap argument. The second world war was fought because it was basically a continuation of the first world war and so let's look at the first world war. It would be fair to say that out of all of the European countries who went to war in '14 was the United Kingdom who saw an opportunity for an Imperialistic land-grab. So, we're the ones who effectively caused the two world wars in Europe. And nowhere once did I read in any of Lloyd-George's speeches did he once say that it was to do with us having a voice in who can come in and those who can't. You may as well come up with the spurious argument that we didn't fight two world wars because we didn't want cucumbers that were bent.
so what did english soliders people die for .. say the second world war and we did not defend our land . this is what i am on about .
The English soldiers fought and died for the same principles as the Welsh, Scottish and Irish soldiers. You know why we went to war; that was because we had a Treaty with Poland which was essential to our trade. Remember the famous speech by Chamberlain? Well, if Germany had pulled out of the lands which we had taken from Germany as reprisals then we wouldn't have gone to war. We went to war for the same reasons as the Americans did. Trade. Yes, you can dress it up with all sorts of jingoistic patriotic principles but at the end of the day our involvement was purely down to protecting our trade. When Churchill went over to see Roosevelt to ask for help he was told that the American people wouldn't stomach another war. Next talks it was agreed that Britain would dissolve a lot of the trading links with India and to start to dismantle the Empire as the US wanted better trading possibities. And all they had to do was to wait for a good opportunity to go to war, i.e. to sell the war to the American people. Pearl Harbor was the excuse that Roosevelt needed. And go back umpteen wars, if it's not for My God Is Better Than Your God it's down to trade. Please don't think that the Second World War was down to altruism on our part. It wasn't. If Liberation is supposed to be our watchword there's a lot countries out on the planet's surface which wish that they hadn't been liberated by us over the course of the past couple of hundred years.
Well done all the jobless racist idiots! I'll just wait and hand out pastys when the **** hits the fan. I hope I'm wrong Obviously I understand people have reasons, however a large proportion of this vote unfortunately involved the this is England brigade finally using a pencil.
ha ha you nah your stuff .. hitler invaded us didnt he ..so cant see how it was about trade on our behalf ( battle of britan)
Hitler invaded us? Where are you based, the Channel Islands? And for the record Hitler didn't want the UK to go to war. He was quite happy to have us on the bylines and to carve up the bits that wasn't owned by us at that point between us. If we'd not have gone in the war in Europe would have been over quicker and there still would have been as much, if not more, pink on the map.
Hitler most certainly did not want war with us - the night time raid on Berlin kinda forced his hand. He also could have smashed us to ruin at Dunkirk. Was it due to him thinking it was more imperative to finish off France? Most probably but part of me always thinks that he would hesitated do his mixed feelings towards Britain. The individual Tommy though - I don't think it was his idea to fight for his country to eventually be part of a federation which attempts to dominate other countries into union. That was exactly the opposite most soldiers were fighting against.
No, we didn't want straight bananas and curved cucumbers. This was, of course, in the days before Ann Summers...
I didn't say that, did I? What I doubted was your somewhat extraordinary claim that Hitler invaded these islands.
If that statistic is so, and I have no reason to doubt it, then this is appalling. After all, this is their future and referenda like this don't come around that often*. *unless you live in Scotland, that is.
