    Is this serious? <laugh>

We dont need these turbines in the UK, it isnt like the governement has said "**** we need some turbines, get a German company in to build them and we'll be fine". These turbines are for off shore sites and the fact that they're being manufactured in Hull is brilliant for the local economy. Siemens dont give a **** where they build them, they want the best economic deal and came very close to choosing a site in Denmark over Hull, but this area was made very attractive to them via government incentives.

I really dont think you get it.

Of course you did. And you could build most of the worlds anything its not a lack of the ability to do so that stops you.

We will soon lose the ability to produce military grade steel. If we do we will be one of the only world powers that lacks the capacity. The government could use National Security as a reason to subsidise its production, but has chosen not to.

We 'may' cease production of military grade steel, it hasn't happened yet.

    And the question is why?

It's not like we're buying subsidised military grade steel from China, we're buying unsubsidised military grade steel from Sweden, because it's much better quality than the stuff we make here.

Remember Your Darlin' 'Arold's famous "This will not, of course, affect the pound in your pocket."? Obviously a lie, as his mouth was moving.

Its up to A thousand jobs, some of which will be existing Siemens employee's moving to Hull. Some additional workers during construction of the factory and an unspecified amount of jobs in the supply / support once the plant is up and running.

Further more due to the volatile nature of the wind turbine industry this may not be a long term thing, despite the investment of 160 million (Siemens figures) I know someone who works for Vestas (another turbine manufacturer) who says its a very unstable business.

And the final point is they won't be leaving Hull if the UK votes to leave the EU.

In the context of the debate, it could be seen as important to be able to arm ourselves. In or Out it makes no difference. We are not self sufficient and we have not been for sometime.

We would have to first agree on what we really do "need" to be able to decide on that.

We certainly don't need a fraction of the crap we currently consume... imo of course.

We certainly need good quality food, shelter, education, and healthcare. But they appear to be well down the list of current priorities.
At least for those who already have them.

Because the EU grants encouraged manufacturing industries to relocate to various bases on the mainland.
