There are plenty of useful sides from Europe who didn't qualify who could make up the other 8 spaces, like Holland, Denmark, Bosnia, Serbia, Greece, Norway, Finland, and dare I include Scotland. These sides are no worse than some of the rubbish that has been qualifying for the 32 team World Cup, lets not forget the likes of Honduras, Iran, North Korea, South Africa, New Zealand, Trinadad and Tobago, Saudi Arabia among others have all played at recent World Cups. A good game of football isn't always about high quality either. There are plenty of low quality games that are very entertaining.
You ****ing tell him mate, but I would probably have put the Faroes in the group of 8 as opposed to Scotland
You need ****e teams at cup competitions. Where would the 'upsets' come from if it was just the elite countries/clubs?
Terry Butcher is good-humoured on the subject of the 1986 World Cup, but the smile slips as he recalls that goal by Diego Maradona. "I still feel the injustice now," he says. "People tell you to let it go, but we felt we could go all the way that year and you still think about what might have been. It was probably the best piece of fraud you will ever see - and he got away with it."
Messi and Ronaldo are both twice the player of Maradona IMO. They have taken the level a player is capable of to the next level for me. Maradona didn't score every game like they do.
You can't really compare them to be honest because of how the game has changed. Your point about players being athletes now is an excellent point though, my fenian friend
