To be honest, I'm a bit disappointed with the way that this has been played out by Rangers. First of all, I'd have liked to see Goodwillie at Rangers as a player, but feel that the added pressure and scrutiny forced on him by playing for the champions might have been detrimental to the player, and while annoyed that the SPL has lost another capable player to a run of the mill English club, I wish him all the best. But what has annoyed me is the way that Rangers seem to be harrassing Dundee United with below par bids, trying to prise the player from the grasp of Blackburn. The Dundee United chairman Stephen Thompson and manager Peter Houston have been very open with where they value the player at £2m, yet Rangers are STILL, even after a Blackburn bid of £2m plus add-ons, making bids of below £2m for the player! It seems to me that we are haggling over a £200k or so, yet we pay £1.5m for Wallace, and though he looks a decent player and have been really impressed by him so far, to pay £1.5m for a LB and not pay a mere £500k more for one of the most exciting talents that Scotland has produced in recent years, could be a big regret for Rangers in years to come. I suspect now that Rangers have lost Ally's Top Target and he may feel that Whyte has let him down by not getting him his man. We are led to believe that a £2m bid has been accepted by Villa for Cuellar, and a decent wage too, yet Cuellar has still to make up his mind, well I'd tell Carlos thanks, but no thanks, and have used that cash to get Goodwillie. Then Kenny Miller is in the tabloids over the weekend saying that he knocked back an 11th hour bid from Rangers because he'd already told Malky McKay that he'd be going to Cardiff and didn't want to let him down! To me, it seems that Rangers are half-heartedly trying to get players - the players that Ally needs to put his stamp on the team - and failing to deliver!! This is a big test of Whytes intentions and ambitions for the club and where he will lead us in the coming years, but if he doesn't back the manager and club legend in the transfer market, and McCoist fails to deliver with a threadbare squad, which he inherited from Walter, Whyte may find himself under serious pressure from the fans who don't want to finish last in the 2 horse race!!
I'm not too disappointed about losing out on Goodwillie as I think it's only a matter of time before he gets himself into bother again. However, I'd agree that we seem to be too laid back about pursuing our transfer targets. We need to get the finger out so that we don't end up with another Beattie-style last minute panic buy.
Pretty gutted that we look likely to miss out on him. Could have been a bit of a risk but no doubt has the quality on the pitch. I think £2m was a bargain for a player that could possibly go for 3 or 4 times that ammount in a few years time. I realise that Whyte does not want to get Rangers back into the habit of spending big each transfer window and we are still looking to bring a few players in on loan but we need some more players in. If we get an injury to Naisy or jelavic we are in trouble up front.
To me, it's another symptom of how English football is ruining Scottish football. We (SPL) just can't seem to retain any player with a decent level of ability, and as such, our game up here will never improve. It used to be jaw dropping when Aberdeen or Hearts used to lose players to Englands 2nd tier, now it's the OF who can't compete.
I think that they relied too much on the fact that Goodwillie was a Gers fan. They were hoping that if he turned round and said 'I only want to go to Rangers', United would give in and accept a bid from Rangers eventually rather than see Goodwillie remain for another season when they really needed the money.
It's hardly surprising when the likes of Wolves get £40 million/year TV money while we have to survive on £2 million.
You're going to have to go for a haircut if you want to join the Army you 'orrible orangutan beatnik.
I had kind of hoped that Celtic would gazump Rangers to the signing of Goodwillie but it seems our board aren't willing to spend ANY money at all in this transfer window. Basically, we've spent the money we got from the sale of McGeady last year and now we're looking at Bosmans and loan signings.
I think this is kind of sensible given that Celtic need to win the league thsi season to get the Champions League money... I'd rather Celtic's debt was kept managable so they don't have to sell too many players n start a team re-build again.
Surely we can/need to stump up a couple of million for a goalie? If we go into the season with Zaluska as our number one we may as well hand Rangers the title now.
Welcome to Blackburn David This has to be the most embarassing advert ever!
Apparently, Rangers have failed with a FIFTH bid for Goodwillie! http://sport.stv.tv/football/scotti...567-rangers-fail-in-new-david-goodwillie-bid/
I know, it's a ****ing joke!! Surprised that he's not signed for BR yet. Hopefully he tells DU he wants to go to Rangers. Probably not.
Goodwillie will NOT have a medical at Blackburn today and Rangers to make 6th bid for striker!! Just on SSN.
