Bristol City land another non-league gem

HITC Sport understands Shabazz Omefe is set to join the Robins.

Bristol City have lined up a deal for non-league starlet Shabazz Omefe, HITC Sport understands.
The 19-year-old has been handed a short-term deal after impressing during a previous trial spell.
Omefe began playing as a youth with a number of clubs including Chelsea, but after failing to progress he drifted out of football before being picked up by the Aspire Academy - who help young footballers.

He finished last season playing a couple of games for non-league Walton and Hersrham but he will start next season in the pro-ranks with City.
Omefe is a majestic central midfielder, and The Robins' youth staff have very high hopes for him.

City have been keeping a close tab on non-league prospects and last season picked up another Aspire product in the shape of Shawn McCoulsky.
Omefe is set to start pre-season with the youth set-up at Ashton Gate but hopes are high he will soon step-up to Lee Johnson's first-team squad.

'Omefe is a majestic central midfielder'

So begs the question why he wasn't playing higher up the football pyramid ?

We seem to be linked with a lot of 19-21 year olds which is potentially great for the future, but these signings cannot be at the expense of some experience coming in. We all saw how we struggled last season until we added some quality and experience to the starting 11. Just hope it's not the same old mistakes being made

He was at Chelsea. Again like Wiz said, there are some good deals to be made from the national leagues. Lee Tomlin was playing there not so long ago, as was Vardy and Flint. It won't cost us much but could potentially reward us greatly.

Attitude is all about your ability to live up the claims and targets you have set for yourself but when you arrive with the wrong attitude it all goes wrong. Regrettably there are many players out there who bitch and complain when it comes to their selection for any given team and yet expect to be picked again, even after a sub par performance. Earn your wages and just shut up whilst keeping your opinions to yourself because I'm fed up with attitudes. I am just waiting for the racist trump card to pop it's face above the parapet.

I don't think that information alone is to suggest that he's not good enough - there're plenty of examples out there of players playing in non-league even later than 19 and reaching the top. Obviously Jamie Vardy, but also Charlie Austin, DJ Campbell, Ian Wright etc. Those names are big ones to live up to, but that's not to say that he may not have what it takes to reach a high level.

Many of the players we have out in France right now began their careers in the lower leagues.
The thing here is somebody HAS to give them the chance to evolve or they never will. And as we are a small fish in a big pond it makes sense that the Bristol Citys' of this world are the speculators. Because we can't afford to throw 15 million at a player (which is the basic average for a good championship or run-of-the-mill Premiership player) to find out if he makes the grade
