The only one who gets my back up at the mo is Glenn Hoddle. States the bleedin obvious and does it in monotone dialogue, boring and as annoying as hell. He'd be perfect if the Blind Institute tuned it, or perfect for radio!!!!!!!!!!

Commentary comes from the even worse, Sam Matterface and Andy Townsend.

    Yes, not great, particularly Townsend.

However I'd rather have Benny from Crossroads commentating than Tyldesley.

Was Rob Hawthorne on Radio Humberside in the mid to late 80s with David Golley (admittedly both names might be wrong here)? If not, I’m sure the person I’m referring to did move further up the food chain from Radio H and Hawthorne seems to be knowledgeable about City.

Used to like listening to it. "There's been a goal at The Hawthornes [play RH goal intro clip] let's go... Yes, it's West Brom 1 Hull City 0 a terrible calamity etc etc"

At the time, Brian ‘and it’s in there…” Moore used to aggravate me a bit, but now I enjoy watching TBM from the 70s/80s on youtube.

Also, as a child, I learnt from John Helm that upright is a synonym of goal post.

Whatever happened to the City commentator, Harvey ....?

Most of the TV commentators/pundits are ****e, but the best-ever co-commentator was Jack Charlton at the '94 World Cup.

I agree and in addition, his monotone southern accented delivery grates on my nerves.

Kenneth Woldtenholme won the DFC and bar flying over 100 missions in a Mosquito in a pathfinder squadron, a very hazardous operation. Ended up as a Squadron Leader. Can't imagine any of the other commentators that have been mentioned being capable of doing something similar.

A great commentator and I really enjoyed his role as Frank Lee Brian in Lenin of the Rovers.
Don't get me started on Clive Tyldsley though - he's dreadful.

I can imagine Motson operating a drone to enable him to spy into kids' bedrooms and school changing rooms.

Like Conor McNamara. If he is not on the BBC TV bit he tends to be on the red button for the 5 Live commentary, so you can mute the TV stuff and listen to a different type of update whilst still seeing the pictures.
Guess you could simply mute the ITV experts entirely and have 5 live on radio instead

I agree but would expand it to all American football (soccer) commentators. They spend most of the time talking about anything but the game happening in front of them. What little they say about the game is so obvious to the viewer it is not worth saying. Such as "The ball has gone out for a throw in". What they don't do is follow the game by identifying who passed and who received the ball when it is not obvious from the screen.

From an American perspective, every single Yank commentator is terrible. In a country where we can produce such great baseball, hockey, and (American) football announcers, why can't we product just one good soccer announcer?

ESPN employs Ian Darke as commentator and he is a joy to listen to. They used to team him with Steve McManaman but he's since moved into the studio. It's a shame because they made a good team. We get Martin Tyler whenever the England national team is shown here, and is top class. We get Jon Champion now and then. We seems very good but uses too many British idioms and colloquialisms which sound confusing to those of us in the colonies.
