There's a massive area of grey in the middle of this subject fats. Yes, you're perfectly correct that 'what happens in one place doesn't mean it'll happen somewhere else', however, if done well (and from relevant data) there are always some stats that can be proven significant enough in improving your predictions regards your expected output.

If continuously reviewed by a human, the weakness in the stats/model can easily be found and (if proven) ironed out, and the more importantly the knowledge of the human making the decisions will improve with each new iteration. It's a hybrid approach.

Key part that we all discuss on here is how relevant each stat is regards it's accuracy for future predictions. Some are, some aren't.

    I have two issues with stats;

    1) Their relevance to anything is always subject to endless conflicting interpretations. But more importantly,
    2) They are ****ing boring.

As for Pellegrini, although not as important as guitar skills, his performance in press conferences is not to be sniffed at. I can think of plenty of managers that I wouldn't want to represent Saints post-match.

Absolutely agree and in this sort of our discussion, it was about one poster using win % only to judge a manager's suitability for Saints. That's the bit I disagreed with on using that's one stat.

The stats clearly say that Les Reed gets it right :)

Not sure if this has been posted already and I'm in a rush:

    9/4- Pellegrini
    11/4- Garcia (from 1/2)
    4/1- Puel

Does anybody actually have a clue lol?

Probably a combination of factors - I've seen a bit of French football over the years, and although he won the league with Monaco, it was 16 years ago, and I feel French football isn't necessarily a great platform by which to move to the PL.

His record is fairly average - (remember Lyon are/were a big club around the time he took over, but he didn't win anything).

Look, he may have the longevity, and who am I to say anything against our board's decisions - its just he doesn't exactly inspire much enthusiasm and seems a pretty safe (and cheap) choice.

We are 6th in the PL, European football too, and I just feel we can look a bit better, because we need to also have a manager that can have some pulling power for players coming and players staying. He may be that man, but I'm not so sure myself.

I'd have to suggest I'm not keen on Puel, not because of win % or other stats, just a general gut feel and that I'd rather Pellegrini if he were available, good ethos, great work at perceived smaller clubs, I maybe wrong but I thought Villereal were bloody good, and challenging for the title and set the Champions league on fire.

They played great football and I don't think he will have lost the enthusiasm, he is a football man and I think this may give him the desire to build something akin to what he was used to, at Madrid and Man City he never really had to do that, perhaps that was a little boring dare I say to him...

Will back whoever we bring in, just really hope this one has some legs, wasn't really too hung up on Garcia not because of his ability but more as I thought he would go faster than a Koeman, whereas I don't see that will Pellegrini and I think we are not downgrading either on Garcia, more fine tuning...

I find myself confused at the potential for Pellegrini arriving at Saints.

As mentioned earlier, he seemed tired and uninterested at Man City-understandable considering his demise since the announcement of PG.

People who manage teams of "superstars" never really seem to have their capabilities tested too much and it worries me that he's been kind of treading water at City.

I worry that managers who approach clubs may not be the best appointments but I thought that about the Lying Dutchman too-or maybe I was right after all??!!

I hope that MP has recharged his batteries and brings his pre Man City coaching abilities....

Would pelegrini be an attraction for players? If he was good enough for title winning city then surely good enough to take us to the next level?

Just for the record: I would be delighted with Pellegrini and happy with Pereira.

Pellegrini has a terrific record with clubs of our level in Spain (Malaga, Villareal) - and Pereira was part of a formidable set up at Porto and has done a good job at Fenerbache. Looks a passionate guy.

pelegrini did say he would consider retiring unless an 'interesting project' came up. What a way to end your managerial career- pushing saints on to cl regulars and collecting silverware in the process!

Pellegrini may just have one last chip that he's like to knock off his shoulder following his exit from City. He may just do more than cover it in Mayo :)

How about Pellegrini on a three year deal in which he co-manages with Fonte in that third season?

That's fair Al and why I asked. I don't watch French football so I really couldn't make a comment other than we couldn't just judge on win % (as you have also said) and that people I know in football coaching world, say he has a great reputation as a coach.

Not sure he would like co managing. Also fonte would need a while before he can step into that position. I do agree Fonte is future management material though.

Well ok... Assistant then. I'm just suggesting Fonte could learn from him and MP could help him, rather than declaring the position.

Take the gist of the message :)

To me Pellegrini is a clear statement of intent and carries prestige whereas Puel is not either sadly.
