...looks superb as a midfield kingpin. Could extend his career by another 3 or 4 years.

    Agreed.

He's one of those players, just great at everything. Could put him anywhere on the pitch.

Yep, my mate said exactly that. I've never bought into the idea that he's finished. He's just got so much technical quality. He's got it all - great vision and passing, a great engine and he still has that brute strength. Few people retain the ball better than him.

I'm very happy he's being played in a deeper role, and giving players like Alli, Vardy and the sort chances.

It suits him almost too well. Makes me wonder how much better England could've been had he been playing there longer.

an awful lot of media was pushing for him to be dropped pre tournament. shows what they know. Is this the first tournament since 2004 that he has been fully fit?

That's because he was expected, if he was in the squad, to be played in the attack. Also we looked very good with him out of the side.

Which he shouldn't be in. So I was with the media all the way on that.

Is this the tournament when Rooney finally lights up the stage? Got good feelings about this team

I think he's a better midfielder than striker.

He's much better where he is now.

Anyone know what's happened to his finishing? He used to be able to rifle shots in from all angles but he can seems to only be able to pass it towards goal now.

Can Joe Hart fend of the challenge for position?

I think he is now, looks as if this will be his best position for the future.

No disputing Rooney played well both games, but you have to wonder if the team would be better if they didn't have to accommodate him and instead looked at building the team around a Kane/Vardy partnership.

I confess I was one who wanted him dropped, I just didn't see him as a striker when we have better options now (yes even Kane despite his last 2 games).

However, I'm happy to admit that this role seems to suit him and I was wrong. His passing is sublime, and if he's in the box, he's still more than capable of scoring. He loses the ball too easily sometimes, and if he tries too hard to recover it, there's a danger of a card, but he plays with commitment and he is very good still.

He gets a lot of stick, but he is genuinely a huge footballing talent and could be the catalyst for us to do better than normal.

Ive honestly said for 10 years he should be playing more like Scholes than a striker. His attributes were much more appropriate for that role.

We've played a poor Russian team and a Welsh team mainly made up of average PL/Championship players.

Think I'll reserve judgement until we play against a decent team.
