So the weeks of voting have finally come to an end, It was great fun and I really enjoyed reading all the different Horns oppinions ... The final list below firstly shows the winners for each position, Their appearances & Goals scored. I have then added in a supersubs list that includes all the players that got close but did not quite make it (plus also a couple of nostalgic inclusions) Hope you agree but feel free to comment and make a case for any extra players to our sub list (Although with the subs bench going down to 5 next season they wont all get a game! ) GK: Tony Coton: 1984 â 1990 / Appearances 291 RB: Nigel Gibbs: 1983 - 2002 / Appearances 491 / Goals 7 CB: John McClelland: 1984 â 1989 / 90 / Appearances 234 / Goals 3 CB: Ian Bolton: 1977 â 1983 / Appearances 287 / Goals 36 LB: Paul Robinson: 1996 â 2003 / Appearances 252 / Goals 9 RM: Nigel Callaghan: 1980 â 1987 / 91 / Appearances 298 / Goals 52 CM: Les Taylor: 1980 â 1985 / Appearances 211 / Goals 20 CM: Allan Nielsen: 2000 â 2003 / Appearances 113 / Goals 19 LM: John Barnes: 1981 â 1987 / Appearances 296 / Goals 85 CF: Luther Blissett: 1976 â 83 / 84 â 88 / 91 â 93 / Appearances 503 / Goals 186 CF: Tommy Mooney: 1994 â 2001 / Appearance 287 / Goals 64 SUPER SUB LIST Tommy Smith: 1997 â 2003 / 2006 â 09 / Appearances 306 / Goals 64 Danny Graham: 2009 â 2011 / Appearances 91 / Goals 41 Wilf Rostron: 1979 â 1989 / Appearances 404 / Goals 30 Ashley Young: 2002 â 2007 / Appearances 110 / Goals 22 Ross Jenkins: 1972 â 1983 / Appearances 398 / Goals 142 Cliff Holton: 1958 â 61 / 65 -66 / Appearances 163 / Goal 104 Richard Johnson: 1991 â 2003 / Appearances 277 / Goals 22 And I have decided to add 1 extra super sub in: For showing true loyalty to our club for the first time I can remember in a long time! Our current Captain: John Eustace: 2008 to present day / Appearances 119 / Goals 12 It's been emotional!
Cheers Norway. I will keep a list of this team and maybe in a couple of years we could run another one and see if it comes out the similar or totally different! Looking over the super subs I think I may get a few Questions from the more mature Horns like OFH, GG, BB etc, asking why Stewart Scullion is not on the list! so may have to add him in to keep all happy
If each player was at the peak of their powers, that squad would make a push for a top 4 Premier League finish next season - good stuff
I'd expect them to challenge for the title. After all, half that team did finish second, and the other half have been considered better than their 82/83 counterparts.
I should think so to. The great authority on Watford, our Ollie, reckons that he was his favourite all time player.
What a team that would have been. Great at the back, very useful inMidfield and lethal up front. Subs arent to shabby either. We would have taken Europe by storm. Excellent post and really enjoyed it. How about a worst Hornet 11.
Thanks for running this ET, and I think the resulting line-up is pretty satisfactory. Don't fret too much about the Scullion issue. I suspect we look back with rose tinted glasses. We truly loved him, but when you consider that he didn't exactly set the world on fire when he stepped up a level or so to Sheff U, it probably says that 3rd Div / struggling 2nd Div Watford was his natural environment. BTW I do appreciate being described as 'mature'. Will relay this to Mrs GG.
Could be amusing, but on the whole too painful to contemplate! We've spent too long in therapy trying to erase some of them from memory.
That 11 could take on the Prem - and win. Worst 11, are you ready for this???? Either Perry, or both! Geidmintis McClenaghan (mid 70's forward, so slow he ended up at the back) Morris Darlington Sterling Chivers (so rubbish at RB he was tried in MF) Train Mark (the bloke who only lasted 45 mins on loan from Bristol) Hertherston Trevor Senior - Dave Bassett chased him all summer and paid 325k Mick Quinn - and people wonder why I'm nervous about loanees!!!! PS : this message was written whilst sitting on the khasi in downtown Blagoevgrad. Do I get anything extra for the dedication??????
Train was ok, most of the time. I will put it down to Elixir's delicate state of health at the moment.
I find it incredible that anyone could include Ray Train in a list of worst Hornet players!!! This is the guy that was largely instrumental in getting us promoted from Div 3 to Div 2 and then consolidated in Div 2. Don't forget as well that he scored the second goal in the 7-1 humbling of Southampton in the famous League Cup game. Did you actually ever watch Train, Elixir? And Worrell Sterling - very good when he was young - still better than many when he left the club. Can't really disagree with most of your other recommendations, although I still maintain that some of our worst players include: Goal: Peter Goy, Frank George, Plumley(!) Defenders: Furphy!!(good manager, terrible right back), Goodeve, Drysdale, Dave Butler, Packer, Meldrum, Kenny Sansom, Dominic Ludden, Leo Markham Midfield: Walsh, Martin Kuhl, Paul Atkinson, Jason Soloman, Geoff Pitcher, Laurie Craker Forwards: John Fraser, Tommy Anderson, Jimmo Lawton, John Hamilton, Greenhalgh, Charlie Woods, Alan Kennedy, Steve Butler, Scott Fitzgerald, Peter Beadle, Albert Jarrett, Mike Kenning The list goes on............
