I was thinking about this earlier after it was mentioned that Ronaldo is supposedly gay, not that it's much of a stretch to believe. If not him then statistics will tell you that it stands to reason that there will be gay professional footballers other than Shearer, and probably some top players.

Let's say Ronaldo is gay for the sake of argument. It looks like he's planning to get through his playing career without coming out, I'd guess either to protect his image (aka money) or to avoid giving his opponents ammunition. However if society is ever going to accept gay footballers then it's going to need people like Ronaldo to grow a pair and come out or nobody ever will.

It wasn't all that long ago that black footballers had a similar stigma to cope with depending where they went (still do to an extent) but now for me at least I don't give a **** what colour someone's skin is. It's a very multicultural game. As much as I wouldn't be super chuffed to be fielding a fabulous out and proud first Sunderland eleven, I believe that the way forward is for that attitude to die out like the dinosaurs.

Just wondering what you all thought about it.

There are probably hundreds of top players who are gay, I'm not sure it's about growing balls and being accepted necessarily, I think it would bring an unwelcome distraction to any footballer who wants to just play and do well, having to deal with idiots and homophobic chants etc especially in places like Russia.

It wouldn't bother me if our full squad was gay, as long as they had quality and give their all, every game, for us.

Suspect there are a fair number but I know that I don't really talk about my personal life at work and if i were gay would be no more likely to do so - doubt I'd mention it really. Then there's the worry that all it takes is one of your team-mates to be uncomfortable with it and you may regret you mentioned it, there's plenty of people who are "ok with gays" but wouldn't want to shower alongside one (not sure it that still happens really in football changing rooms) and that's sort of 'acceptable homophobia'.

On that note, not sure calling Shearer gay as a form of insult helps set the correct tone. Good points overall though!

I don't think it'd bother me either but I wouldn't enjoy all the piss taking from other sets of fans. I know it's weak to be concerned with what other people think but I'm just being honest.

If every club had an out gay player or two then nobody would have much to say to each other about it and any young gay players wouldn't feel they had anything to hide. It'd be better all round I reckon.

He dates women which makes him anything but gay. If you're attracted to the opposite sex, you're not gay regardless of how much you may fancy a person of the same sex.

You say you think the attitude should die out, but unless you develop an understanding, you're in exactly the same boat as most folk.

My sister is gay, I've got gay, straight and bi-sexual friends, Ronaldo is not gay even if he does ****s hairy arses. No offence but you're showing the lack of understanding which is one of the last hurdles many gay people have to face in ever growing equal society. It's a minor misunderstanding but a prominent one which still installs a faux view on being gay.

You want to tackle the stigma than start with yourself is all I can advise. You may not hate it but your post shows you're far from understanding it.

Bi sexual is not gay. Want to understand and accept it. Get the basics right, not you specifically, but anybody like you who's clear unsure of what is what.

It was my interpretation that he's had a string of girlfriends in order to protect his image, he wouldn't be the first and he won't be the last. Neither you or I know his true sexuality and I don't care either, I just used him as an example to set up the debate.

You're right though, I'm not an expert on the subject by any means and I'll admit I've got to learn more and understand more about it. I think I'm getting a grasp of the subtleties of it as time goes by. It's not really people like me who need to change the most though as I'm willing to accept and understand, it's the guy in the crowd who'll shout gay slurs at any and all gay players who needs to get their head round the concept if we're going to improve the view of gay players in football.

I wouldn't mind it, I think we could have a laugh with it. Imagine the full south stand showing their brown ring piece to the away fans in the premier concourse?

I bet they'd sharp stop the taunts once they get a glimpse of that sight.

Great post fella, and I wasn't having a go(incase you thought I was)
    .
I think my point is if true equality is to exist means it doesn't need any debate, let people **** who they want and stop trying to define everything(not you personally but general attitudes). If I was a gay footballer I wouldn't come out, I'd just be pigeon holed with the other sexualities which because if it's not 'straight' is mostly miss-understood. You can't fight a battle on your own, so don't fight, just be

Says it all with Ronaldo and your opening comment. He is a bit of a narcissist, he almost fancies himself and structures and sculpts himself on his professional occupation and a love of his self and what he personally would like to perceive himself. But because he grooms does that make the women he's pictured are a cover? What else makes you think it's a cover? Like you say it happens, but the decision to target one footballer as an example I find puzzling. Chances are the gay footballers in the premier league are more rugged than me or you. How a person looks isn't an insight into his or hers sexuality in the slightest. But you picked up on Ronaldo. Why not Messi? Costa? Or anyone? You have no way of knowing

I don't think any footballer should 'come out', it only indulges the ignorant curiosity when the same curiosity can be indulged to a far more satisfying level of understanding by reading or talking to people about sexuality(as you've done here Nacho, Kudos on the subject matter and your openness to aproach it.)

Is anybody gay or bisexual or whatever on here? I'd be staggered if you got a negative reaction. Ignorance doesn't equate to hatred. Vile and hateful comments on such matters generally stem from people who are all round angry, hateful and o'rrid. But lacking the understanding is big problem which will continue unless you help to educate. It's a two way street.

I know from one of my friends in particular(straight acting and hard as ****) 99% of the stigma he's faced has been from his familly which is a very difficult and trying situation for them to face.

I know I can come across uptight but I'm actually a very very liberal person but still very traditional values. I do tend to kick against ignorance(in understanding, not in an offensive term) and over the top political correctness. Let people people **** who they want without having to explain themselves I say.

Not at all mate. You said you had no problem back at 10:16 (though the big cock request was a worry <laugh>)

I've worked in north London now for nearly 30 years and have many friends over that time who were / are gay. I couldn't give a **** what they do behind closed doors.

They were, are all awesome people, and I respect each and every one!

All my gay/bi mates love the straight/gay back and forth banter. So long as it's for fun and not hatred. Must say thought fella, None of my mates have had the slightest urge to just get their brown ring piece out. Think that's just you thing.<cheers>:emoticon-0172-mooni

I don't understand homophobia anymore than I understand claustrophobia, xenophobia, magaphobia,...etc, etc.

I've never understood why people want to hate or fear anything.

Other than something wanting to eat you....in which case, hate the hell out of it!!

If everyone had your attitude there'd be no debate, if only.

I'm getting a bit sick of talking about Ronaldo today haha but just to explain that part of it, I had always assumed he was straight despite the grooming and whatnot but then I read that he'd gone to America to have his sperm implanted in order to have a child which seemed an odd thing for a straight man in his position to do. Then there was a few stories about him getting a plane every day after training to go to Germany to be with some bloke. Rightly or wrongly I drew my conclusions.

Anyway, enough gossip about Ronaldo. I shouldn't be reading crap stories like that in the first place.
