Just a matter of time before there's one over here, there are so many soft targets where such an atrocity would not be expected. Sympathies to those in Orlando...

Officials have named the suspect as Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old from Fort Pierce, a city about two hours drive south of Orlando, in St Lucie County.

An FBI spokesman said the gunman appeared to "have leanings towards" radical Islamist ideology but it was not yet clear whether this was a case of domestic or international terrorism.

Police said he had been armed with an assault-type rifle, a handgun and some type of suspicious device.

They have not said whether they think the nightclub was targeted because it is gay.

US Congressman Alan Grayson said it was "no coincidence" the attack happened in a gay club.

And Mr Mateen's father told NBC News his son became very angry when he saw two men kissing recently in Miami.

 

Family are from Afghanistan.

 

what I don't understand is surely that when the first shot was fired, why no more police arrived. Also, no panic buttons at the entrance of the night club or metal detectors - especially bearing in mind the US has been the victims in some horrific terrorist attacks in the last few years.

When will it end?

 

It started as a hostage situation and 3 hour stand off. Then the Islamic extremist appears to have started executing the hostages with a semi automatic rifle so the police went in.

You can't negotiate with these psychopaths

 

As most on here will know I have less than no time for Islam and its terrorist wing. But in this case I think psychopath is the key word. Doesn't look like this bloke belonged to any terrorist network, just a stone cold common or garden nutter. Islam may have helped him pick his target, but if he was not Islamic he would have done something equally horrific. As always in the US the ease with which they can arm themselves is incomprehensible.

If anything emerges about radicalisation etc I will be happy to stand corrected.

 

US police spokesmen believe that he was ISIS inspired, and had been investigated for terrorism twice. But he may not have been an agent of ISIS as such

 

I think it will transpire that he is a psychotic homophobe, I'm sure the US government would like to label him as IS backed or inspired

 

That will go down well in the US. Expect mass bombing in Syria/Iraq in the coming days.
