Willie raiding Auteuil with Footpad and Un De Sceaux again. Footpad in the Grade 1 Alain Du Breil Hurdle at 3.00 over an extended 2m 4f and Un De Sceaux in the Grade 1 Haies D'Auteuil at 4.05 over an extended 3m 1f. Also in the latter race are Ptit Zig, Thousand Stars, Silsol, Ubak, Aubusson and Whiteout from UK/Ireland. Does this suggest we might see Un De Sceaux in the World Hurdle next year? This is the furthest he has run by some way. Or is it just the first place prize money of €233,100 which has tempted them?
Just passing on a horse given to me for tomorrow, about third hand down the line however. Doncaster 3.30 Fendale 20-1 EW I could not present a reason to back this horse as it is first time out, 20-1 and has seen no early money, and is actually pink on oddschecker. I was told however that the stable think it is on a mark it can win a decent race from, whether that is tomorrow, the price tends to suggest not but worth keeping an eye on. I have only decided to put it up as did not want to see it win and have not put it up on the daily thread. My selection in the race would probably have been Shore Step if forced to have a bet in such a hard race, but have had a small EW on Fendale.

3.45 Salisbury Burnt Sugar 28/1 each way Salisburys highlight on the card is the 6f Listed race at 3:45, Marlin in particular the return of Middle Park winner Charming Thought. He's a huge price at 11/2 but you would think today is about getting him back on a racetrack and stepping towards other targets. Strath Burn and Watchable should ensure there's a good pace on here and I am expecting Burnt Sugar to pick up some pieces late on- but will he pick up enough of them to place? He has some red hot handicap form to his name and in a listed contest with many questions, he might not be far away from them today despite ratings. A rattling 6f is what he wants to run behind. The odds were big enough to take that small chance.
Ardhoomey and Shamreen double at Cork. Footpad and Un De Sceaux double at Auteuil. And I'll fire them all into an acca.
Careful with the going forecast at Auteuil today. ATR and SL say it is "Good", RP "Very Soft". On the weather, ATR reports that it is raining at the moment. Just checked Paris-Turf. After the first race they advise that the ground is indeed "Very Soft" ("Terrain très souple"). Forgotten what little French I learnt at school, but think that's right.
I am all over CHARMING THOUGHT. It's unlike Godawful to persevere like this, there was a recent example of them bringing one back after 600 days and winning. For all their faults they can certainly have them ready first time up and this one is a class act if he has retained his ability.
The Galacticos doing OK for their countries so far - Bale and Modric both scoring stunners. No doubt Ramos will get sent off for Spain
The Cathedral Stakes (3:45) at Salisbury does look like a fascinating contest. With the going reported as Good to Firm, clearly the rain that hit Ascot (Berkshire) managed to avoid Wiltshire. The fly in the ointment is Charming Thought, Charlie Appleby’s colt not seen on the track since winning the Middle Park two years ago. Obviously if he retains that ability he should be able to win this easily on his way to better things. Ayr Gold Cup winner Don’t Touch makes the trip down from Richard Fahey’s northern base and ran up a sequence last year but is he good enough for this based on going down by little more than a length in a Group 2 blanket finish? Danzeno was third to Muhaarar in the Sprint on Champions’ Day last year and returned with a third to Magical Memory at York, so he looks good enough but his last win was a four-runner affair and he does not win very often. On a strict line of form, however, he has it all to do with STRATH BURN as Charlie Hills’ colt was touched off by Twilight Son in the Group 1 Haydock Sprint Cup where Danzeno was only sixth. He had a warm up race at Windsor (finished close behind race-fit Watchable and Naadirr) and can pick up winning ways today.
