Yes, perhaps the most sensible thing is to walk away....if you can. There is safety in numbers...one England fan is fighting for his life after becoming isolated and hit round the head. Also would you walk away if you saw an England fan being attacked....some would, but others would try and help. Football encourages team spirit after all, sometimes in a bad way. Left alone, the worst you would get is an England fan falling over in the street. We don't have the nasty gangs so much anymore, but other countries do.

I know "banter" is a much derided term, but honestly I can say that the vast majority of dislike at club level is purely that.

Yes some players are genuinely hated, but that's the minority.
