http://www.independent.co.uk/news/w...most-dangerous-place-to-be-young-8166738.html A city that has two sides?
Do you take the opposite view just for the hell of it? Marseille is very well known for being an incredibly dangerous place.
Amazed that the Police etc were working given that almost all of France is or is about to go on strike......... Only time I've been to Marseille we were doing the drive along the coast from Spain to Italy and missed the underpass that by passes the center of town and we ended up in traffic that was brought to a standstill by a strikers rally, fire crackers being let off all over the place. Needless to say we didn't hang around.
Per Mirror: "Pictures and video emerging this morning of fighting and clashes in the early hours in Marseille - where England is set to face Russia in their opening match tomorrow - were scenes nobody wanted to see. It is claimed that the local youths were incensed by the chanting - Marseille has a strong Islamic community with Muslims making up a third of the population. People claimed online they heard chanting from English fans: "ISIS where are you? We've got pork on the barbecue." "
A second night of violence involving England 'fans'. ISIS needn't bother with acts of terrorism, it looks as if some of those that have travelled have saved them a job. A ball hasn't been kicked yet and there's hooliganism already. FFS!
Well it's comforting for the 70K plus Irish fans that are travelling to France that 8 Garda officers have gone to France to mingle with them to provide support to the French Police.......
What they will quickly realise is that the French police don't use kid gloves, and especially when they have a high terrorist alert on.
Are any of you really surprised by this? Name a tournament where it hasn't kicked off. It's all part of the fun, no? Added to which ,the fragile state of Europe and the world in general, it's a given that there will be trouble.
No! I was just saying how it was when I was there, last time abut 5 years ago when we we drove into the Centre and spent the day near the waterfront. It was great. Never saw or felt any out of the ordinary danger there, but we weren't walking around suburbs wearing football shirts either, which you won't want to do in small numbers in most large Cities. I've never heard before it was especially dangerous there either, like Napoli for example. Have you been to Marseille or France?
Just watched the opening ceremony in the Six Nations Irish pub in Central Brussels. The pub has got people in it from all over Europe. The French national anthem was sung with gusto. It must be the best national anthem around. At times like this, I just love being a proud European. Enjoy the footie folks.
We're off! Allez les Blues! Normally I would support the underdog, but given what France has been through in the last 18 months,I hope they do well for their country.
There's a bar called Bar Delerium close to that which has a beer menu like War and Peace and a nice grungy vibe. Have a great time Eamon!
Poor game thus far. Romania missed a sitter early on. Only a matter of time before French class should tell.
