This is a good article which sums up the situation regarding fibre broadband quite well. There's a bit about Hull at the end. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-35995965
Just a little update to this old thread (if anyone is remotely interested). Got rid of KC/Karoo broadband which was around 1Mbps download speed at best this time of night. Got the new EE 4G router - £25.20 for 32GB monthly usage (with 10% disc as EE customer). Weekend and evening speed around 30Mbps, like chalk and cheese to KC, £15 cheaper. If you can't get lightstream anytime soon an option to consider. please log in to view this image
Bumping this thread because lo and behold, I'm getting 2 Mbps at my parent's place. 145x slower than student accommodation for ****'s sake. Guy next door got something called Connexin installed a week ago. Dunno how good that is.
Connexin have been round Hull for years In my simple mind it's like a massive wifi network When I looked they didn't cover West Hull though, but that was a while ago
]Connexin is good, but caps usage at 250gb which was too low for me. Its about £22 incl voip 01482 line rental. My lightstream is a steady capped 75mbps (never drops) and 700gb which is more than acceptable, even if a bit over-priced. Still can't find anyone who has Pure
Summat has to be done about this ****e monopoly. 2 Mbps is a joke. A Nepalese monk on a hill somewhere could probably get a quicker connection on his mobile phone network. We can't even get Lightsteam where my parents live. I'll have to convince my dad about an EE router.
when will lightstream get there? my area is due within a couple of months. i get 4Mbps. it works for me.
It's the same anywhere in the UK. We use ADSL which is a bit **** for broadband but made sense at the time. There are in fact far more of these blackspots elsewhere in the country than in Hull. The monopoly you bemoan doesn't exist.
My lad's just moved to Indianapolis and the company that he works for as an intern has (non fibre) broadband, he was telling me yesterday that he gets speeds of 75mbps download and 20mbps upload.
Most of America has cable as standard instead of ADSL. I don't fully understand cable but I think it can achieve higher speeds in some circumstances but can also be much worse in rural areas than ADSL which isn't great itself.
2017 apparently. Browsing and watching YouTube vids is alright for me but I've just bought GTA V for my Xbox (on disc). The title update is around 8GB because it's been out so long and this is the first time I'll be playing it. I've installed the game but the title update will take nearly 10 hours. I still don't know what provider my uni accommodation had but I downloaded Assassin's Creed Unity from the Xbox Store and the game was 40GB. It was fully downloaded after an hour and half.
