Given that we've been linked with de Boer as the new manager, there could yet be more milage in the Dutch leagues

Sure, though Leicester's net transfer spend in their two years back in the Prem was ~50m.

However, telling people you are ambitious doesn't necessarily convince them. Neither does a five-year plan to advance two league positions. Therein lies the problem: the board might be really ambitious, but if the players and managers don't think they can realize their aims (whether those are achievements or wages) in a reasonable timeframe, they will look elsewhere. Throwing cash around happens to be one of the tangible ways to demonstrate that you're serious.

Agree, and the other part of the problem is that you can say your ambitious until you are blue in the face, but until you start throwing money around people won't take you seriously. Wouldn't surprise me if there were a few who have left the club who thought "sure they want to get to CL football, but it won't be possible the way they are going about it"

We have a good team...yet people still seem to fear no one will sign for us. We have always attracted players and always will. Does no harm to give players the idea that they can progress with us.

Heck, even "they have a sensible long-term plan...but I'm not waiting until I'm 30" has the same result. There's something to be said for irrational confidence.

But that's precisely why players and managers and boards talk about "ambition" in the first place. It's a nebulous term that they can always use to justify leaving or staying, or getting snubbed or whatever.

If you asked for a 100m transfer budget, and the club actually gave it to you, then you'd look foolish if you left. Or if you asked for 7m in wages the supporters might turn on you for holding them ransom. But the way it is now, Koeman said he would leave if the club lacked "ambition" and he's leaving... therefore the club must lack ambition. So it's not RK's fault, it's the club's.

He can't lose. If he'd decided to stay, then the fans would have concluded that the board had the requisite "ambition." And it jacks up Koeman's influence because it's like "Wow. The board must be really serious to match Koeman's ambition. And also Koeman must be really awesome if a board as ambitious as ours wants him."

He can't lose. It puts all the pressure on the other side. Any time someone talks about "ambition" it means "I'm not committed, I'm gonna take the offer I like best."

Very true. Let's not forget that, for all that Saints fans will see Koeman as the "bad guy" here and for all that a few journalists have complained about being lied to, most fans of other clubs won't know what Koeman has said about seeing out his contract and would dismiss those comments with a "Well he would say that, wouldn't he?" if they did know. They may question the decision to go to Everton (until they hear about the money) but they won't see Koeman as the bad guy here. If anything they'll probably call Saints fans and the board naive for believing what Koeman said.

Everyone in football equates a clubs ambitions with how much they are prepared to pay me and the greedy b***ards can dress it up as much as they like, we know whats going on regardless of how they dress it up.
Everton will need to spend £100m to get up to our levels (6-8th place) and keep some of their want away stars so no amount of media speak will convince me that this is anything other than £2.5m at Saints or £7m at Everton...........simple maths
With our income we can't afford to throw this level of money at a manager and his team without jeopardising the clubs future and am happy the board have taken the financially sensible route and as usual will bleed The Toffees dry for the privilage

Why has ambition come to mean throwing money at any given situation?
Haven't Leicester shown that there are other ways of succeeding?

Indeed, and they are also showing that no matter what you achieve, the big clubs will stop you going further, by any means.
Even as Champions, they look set for a painful summer.

In truth it is no different than buying out a brand so that it cannot compete with their main income. Or perhaps dismantle it because of a perceived threat.........

£100m is also about 10% of the owners personal wealth - a few bad choices and the money will diminish very quickly, especially in the inflated prices for the next few years following the obscene TV deal. Be careful what you wish for - just ask Leeds Utd fans, a big club can have history which very few of its current supporters can remember.

But it is, these players have won something, the have created something, they are a part of history now. They don't need to leave for Champions league, they don't need to leave for obscene wages, they have both, yet.................off they go.

100 million is next to nothing in today's market, that's only 3 maybe 4 quality players.

Net spend really doesn't mean much though? Tottenham actually made a profit last season and look where they finished, then look at Newcastle. Throwing money around isn't the way to go about it, you need more then just a good squad on the pitch, you need a good infrastructure off of it too (which we have).
