And the logic that a manager will be bad everywhere he goes is good logic?

In terms of how much I'd want each of the managers:

Emery - 9/10 - don't know enough about him aside from the EL wins - but most things I've read seem positive and you don't get the record he has in La Liga and Europa League without being pretty good! From what I understand he's also had to go through losing key players over the years.

Plus it'd be amusingafter Everton (maybe) wanted him before RK

AVB - 8.5/10 - think he's a good manager. Harshly sacked at Spurs, lots of experience of league + europe combined.

Moyes - 6/10 - Not an 'exciting' appointment, but not disasterous. The Everton side he did well with previously was not so different from the Saints team of today.....at Man Utd he was constantly scrutinized, at Saints he would be supported far more.

Howe - 2/10 - just not excited by it, to me it feels like he's made to fit for Bournemouth, but may well struggle to fit in anywhere else. In the same sort of way as Adkins fitted for us (at the time), but has then struggled to replicate elsewhere. Part of the reason it works for Howe is becuase of where he's come from with them.

Martinez - 0/10 - Would be horrendous. To lose Koeman for the guy he's been taken to replace. Every Everton fan I know despaired at Martinez's team and tactics over the past months.

Frank De Boer - 5/10 - Simply becuase I know very little about him or his managerial style. For me it would be like when Poch came in, I'd not come across him as a manager before.

Pellegrini - 6.5 / 10 - Would be interesting to see how he did, but can't see it happening.

I'd rather go on what he has done, rather than on what he might do for us.

Hello! Abramovich demanded the league title every bloody season. Spurs demanded Champions League football. And both their chairmen have very little patience. AVB would be a great appointment for our level.

What's wrong with de Boer or Pellgrini - two other names we're more realistically being linked with? And personally, I'd take AVB in a heartbeat. I mean, sure, I'd love Emery, but I'd love Simeone too. I think the latter is only slightly less likely than the former.

He had every chance of achieving what they expected with what he was given and he failed to do so.

Seems like you wouldn't have hired either Pochettino or Koeman. AVB's record is probably better than either of theirs when they joined us.

While his record with Chelsea was fairly poor, he didn't fail with Spurs...they averaged 1.9 points per game with him at the helm. Poch? 1.75 points/game.

I'm going to put this out there.

If we end up with Moyes, I'm not going to scream the house down. He's not my choice at all, however he stayed for years at Everton and was fairly successful. He wasn't given time at Utd and he always strikes me as a very thorough person who covers every detail.

He has brought through some very good kids at Everton, made some astute signings and is a bit of a disciplinarian so won't take any ****.

I also think he has a massive point to prove to get his reputation back.

As I said, not my go to choice, but if chosen I'll back it and watch with anticipation and interest.

I find it interesting reading people saying AVB 'failed' at Spurs.

Particularly what the notion of failure is for a football manager.

E,g, next season Man City, Man Utd, Chelsea will all be looking to win the league. All have brought in new managers.

Only (at most) one can win the league. Will therefore the other two (or three) managers have failed at their club?

Similarly there are now probably 6 clubs that expect to finish top 4 (Ars, Che, Liv, ManC, ManU, Tot). Are at least 2 therefore guaranteed to be labelled as failures?

I have had to raise the issue of what does it mean to have failed at my work, where the boss had the expectation that everyone should be achieving above average results. Unfortunately, it is not possible for this to happen. You can be perfetly good at your job and still appear to have failed just because a lot of other people are also good at their jobs.

I won't be fuming if he's appointed. He's the "safe choice" out there. He knows the PL very well and I do like the bloke from what I've seen on TV. I would prefer Emery or AVB but it would be far from the end of the world if we ended up with him.

Agree with both Tom & flt, wouldn't be my first choice but i'd be fairly happy with Moyes. Would keep the good defensive side which has been so critical to our success and could easily see him cementing our top 8 (or so) status over the next few years.

I would be pretty annoyed. We've spent years talking about Playing Football The Right Way no matter who we were facing, and appoint a manager who had a well-earned reputation dating back to his Everton days for dour tactics and playing for the point against good competition? Can't see it at all.

Fair enough Schad. I'd give him a chance if the Board chose him. We are very close to the point where we MIGHT have to consider how we best keep the progression going... I.e. There maybe some give or take on style. I said might.

Yep, there's a lot of decent managerial talent on the market right now - some safe choices, other risky bets and a possible coup. It's getting exiting considering the possibilities, I'm not really sure why sotonsaint is so down beat.

I think dour is too harsh really, I think sometimes people mistake a well drilled defensive unit for boring play. Played some good counter attacking stuff at Everton too. Also as mentioned he did well bringing youth through so he fits us there.

I honestly don't think our style of play was all that entertaining for big parts of the last couple of seasons either really... not meant as a criticism to Ron (and I said this during the season too) just how i see it.
