You didn't need the 'Black' as he was just "Superman"

He'd have appreciated just "Superman"... It irked him that Tarzan wasn't black :)

Is Mercenaries Corner a temporary name? Can't we have something a bit more positive? Manager gone, players going, academy upset we need a bit of positivity somewhere. :emoticon-0142-happy

I'll certainly get that off the iPlayer tomorrow, thanks.

I listened to 5 Live a lot through the day, they have been covering the whole of Ali's life and obviously his career all day, they're going on until 1am I believe. Some fascinating and moving memories from all sorts of people. It's worth remembering that when Cassius Clay came back to Louisville from Rome in 1960 with his Olympic gold medal, his country rewarded him by not allowing him to eat in public with white people. That's the sort of thing that the vast majority of black people were resigned to in the South, but Clay, or Ali as he became once he was world champion, wasn't going to stand for it any more, and it inspired him to use his fame for the good of all.

His stand against going to Vietnam was astonishingly brave.

My favourite bit though is when he tells Parky that he only gobs off because he saw the way people reacted to Gorgeous George the wrestler and thought he'd have some of that. That is simply Marketing genius.

Going to catch it on iPlayer. Tbh, that's how I watch most TV. Just being selective with the programme and the time that I watch it. I expect to see a lot of stuff that I saw first time round in the 1960-70's. Hopefully there will be something new and some stuff that brings back the times. Perhaps I'll also finally get around to watching Ali [2001], the film, starring Will Smith. Just never found the moment. In the next few days will be as good a time as any.

I didn't like the film first time around, but probably worth another go.

The other thing I came back on here for is to urge any music lovers to watch The UK's Best Part-Time Band Show. Presented by Rhod Gilbert, with his musical expert, Midge Ure.

Always had a lot of time for Midge Ure because I knew he knows his stuff and has a deep and wide understanding of many music genre. So I would possibly have picked him to accompany Gilbert around Britain to watch bands that have been together for weeks or years, but have one thing in common, they don't do it for the money. In the programme you will hear some bloody tight and rocking music. I generally don't like live music by professional bands because I'm so often let down by their under-rehearsed, showboating. But these bands [you don't get to hear everything] were as tight as ducks arses. They chucked their music out like it really mattered to them because they do it for nothing. For the sheer pleasure of doing it. And it showed. Rhod and Midge saw loads of bands and Midge whittled them down to 5 and eventually down to 2, after getting them to play in Belfast's Limelight nightclub.

That was Episode One. Next time Rhod goes out with another expert and selects other new part-time bands from up and down the country. And I have to say that it's a great programme. I'm really looking forward to the next one. Here's the link to the first: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b07d9tr5/uks-best-parttime-band-1-nations

PS. Look out for the story of the band Pieces of Mind. It's a peach.

One thing's for sure. The real Muhammed Ali was prettier than Will Smith. ;)

Before their fight at Wembley, a journalist said to Henry Cooper "He's a bit of a loudmouth Henry. Are you going to button his lip for him?" Cooper replied "He's selling tickets and I'm on a percentage, let him say what he likes".

Rhod Gilbert was talking about the show, on the Graham Norton show, Friday, and in particular the band you mention, Pieces of Mind.
He said something along the lines of him hearing them discuss having a lottery for the final.
When he questioned them about being a bit presumptuous, about making the final, the response was something along the lines of "We're not gambling on making the final. We're gambling on which one of us won't be alive for the final."
