You can use your own criteria, such as importance, value etc, but I'd argue that with the differential between the top flight and the rest of the world growing to such a degree, plus the increased payments, that was a crucial time to get promoted, as it's only going to get harder for clubs without the Prem funding. On that score, I'd say Diame's was the most crucial goal in football history, and I'd include internationals in that. I'm sure, or at least hoping that someone will have other contenders and measures. There must be some at the other end of the spectrum, such as Swansea's goals against us to stay in the league and demote Exeter to the conference.
One the one hand I agree the Diame goal is probably the most important goal of our history. However we will probably never know if the Allams decide to not sell and carry on. This was always my fear if we won and got promoted, as if not probably the Allams would have sold and then new owners come in, and that could have proved to be a better scenario.
In terms of impacting football across the world: Mark Robbins vs Nottingham Forest, 1989/90 FA Cup 3rd Round The goal that supposedly saved Alex Ferguson's job.
That was the infamous match where Jimmy Hill was watching them in the warm-up and said they looked beaten already, I remember it well. R.I.P. to him
Our most important goal ever was Deano's. Though the most significant financially was Diame's. Different countries will have different ideas on which was the most important goal ever, Geoff Hurst's has to be up there for us, the most exciting after than was probably Beckham's against Greece. Some decent ones on here...
Has to be Deanos Wembley goal for me. Not only was it a brilliant goal but without it I don't think we'd have been promoted that season or any of the others and wouldn't have Diame ito be able to sc
Depends on your perspective as a fan and what you class as most important, for them lot that might be it. If Kane or somebody scores the winner at the Euros this summer I might class it as the most important goal I've seen in my lifetime if I was going to rank England as above City and the likes of Diames and Deanos goals
How would that be more important than any other European Championship - or indeed World Cup - winning goal?
