Well at least you are all back safely and had a good day a[art from the end product. Everyone who i have spoken to or texted me have said the same.. Embarrassed... It was never going to be a pretty game or a football match with wimbledon. but they done enough and got promoted. Wish them well.. Sensible you should have gone to Twickenham and watched argyle on Tv .... There is always next season to win the league now.. 2 seasons in the playoffs we have done better than last season so its progress.. next year is a must via an auto slot..
Just been subjecting myself to extra punishment this morning.....it's 8-45am.... it's unusually dark outside for this time of the year....it's pouring with rain and it feels so cold for the last day of May......perfect weather for how I feel at the moment.....good job the M25 is 5miles away else I might of considered going to play with the traffic......so I have been trolling through the GoS reports and pictures.....plus other write-ups.....and the one comment that turned the knife the most was the fact that at Christmas we where 13pts clear of fourth spot.....if you add to that the 5pts we needed to finish in third automatic promotion position......that is a colossal total of 18pts we have dropped in the rest of the season....how did we manage to grab defeat out of the hands of victory so easily....how did we manage to turn 3pts into 0pts at Accrington & Exeter in the dying moments of the game.....and numerous other last moment blips to drop well earnt points....so easily.....did this team not have enough savvy to play out time for only a few minutes at the end of games to hold on to what they had played so well to earn....I remember seeing the Rovers game last September, scoring right at the end of the match to win three hard earnt points....but no we give it away at the death and drop 2pts just like that....so the signs where already there that early in the season that we couldn't hold on to what we had fought hard to gain.....all blown away in a moment just like dandelion seeds in a gust of wind. There are other teams that can kill off a game even in this grotty league.....why hasn't Adams managed to find similar players......have we the right leader in Curtis Nelson.....don't get me wrong he is the most consistent player week after week in the team....but is he the best leader of men when the going gets tough....do you regulars hear him barking out orders and marshalling the troops when it is necessary ? Lindy reckons the retain and let go list might be out this morning....lets see what happens.....will there be any surprises on it.....will Reuben Reid who is injury prone now be offered a new contract or not....lets see.
Back at 11pm after creative and ineffective efforts to avoid the traffic and a stop at Reading Services with 3,000 other disappointed Greens! I calculate 17 million man-miles were expended in hauling 34,000 fans to Wembley and back to witness I think one save from the Wimbledon keeper, from a Carey freekick. We were completely ineffectual up front until Reid came on in the 82nd minute but by then it was far too late. I don't care how many goals he scores, the ball bounces off Matt far too often to win football matches, at least if you insist on playing with a single striker. Against Portsmouth, we had less possession but more chances with a counter attacking style and deserved to go through. Yesterday, we had more possession (not altogether consistent with Adams' argument about the long ball) and virtually no chances, got embroiled in midfield skirmishing throughout and deserved to lose. Much as I'd like to think I'm a tactical genius, I'm not, which I'm sure you've spotted, but why did that happen? Why change a winning formula? Or did Wimbledon make it happen? The only players who I think did themselves any sort of justice were Sawyer, McHugh and particularly Nelson, who was nothing short of magnificent. The retained list is going to be interesting... There were a pair of drunken sots 20 yards from us who rolled in after the kick off, behaved like prats throughout, spent a good part of the 2nd half away from their seats, presumably at the bar, before departing before Adams and the players came around to apologise as much as salute the fans. The term Fat Chavvy B***ard is probably politically incorrect but accurate in this case. I have no objection to 25,000 turning out at Wembley who don't come every Saturday: it's up to the club to attract them more often. Some people though, you COULD do without... if I'd been sitting behind them, I'd have insisted on my money back.
Morning guys - unlucky yesterday, it wasn't of of the greatest games I've ever watch but ended well for the Dons (my second team) but just wanted to say a massive well done to your fans (the majority anyway). Great banter before the game, good singing during the game and even after you lost and faced a ball-ache of a trip home some of your fans were clapping us out of the stadium in the hotel just down the road. Quality! Obviously being a Geordie supporter I have fond memories of you guys from our promotion a few seasons back as well. A credit to your team and English football fans.
Not so much unlucky G4rd T A.....more of a case of Jeykll & Hyde.....there are two Argyles.... the one that was with us up to the New Year and the one that has thrown a large point advantage for automatic promotion away since. We where in hope when they dispatched Portsmouth in the semis with a commanding display....but they reverted to what you saw at Wembley on Monday....a toothless tiger....so frustrating...knowing that the potential is there to be a very good team.
Notdistant can I ask you a question. I agree that Sawyer was adequate at worst and Nelson gave his all. I would also add Luke to the excused list. He didn't realy do anything wrong did he. Well taken first goal and the second was a penalty. But you thought McHugh was great and I thought he had his worst game ever in an Argyle shirt I've seen. I thought he was terrible admittedly along with most of the others mind you. He looked **** scared most of the time and little happened for him. Infact he almost scored for Wimbledon in a joke miss hit. I genuinely don't know how anyone could say he did well let alone brilliant. Each to their own I know. A bloke I spoke to at Paddington thought Wilde had a great game. I thought he was pants once more. His crosses were garbage and wasted.
From what i seen on the Tv the whole lot were garbage and all to take the blame.. A friend said to me today he thinks nelson may be off? i have not heard that any were yet? But a clear out is needed including Cowdry and Starnes...
Latest scuttlebutt is that Nelson may well be off to Oxford and not for schooling. There is going to be all manner of rumour I suppose. Reid hinted at a few departures when interviewed. Think the comment was along the lines of there being no secrets in the dressingroom and the squad will break up. Even though I went yesterday I still think these play off games are wrong. It is so unfair if you look at it in terms of the whole season. All of the teams that finished forth place didn't even get to the final. Brighton were 6 points above Hull in the Championship. Walsaw were a whole 10 points above Barnsley and Accrington the same above Wimbledon. How can it be fair that they all dip out. They didn't even get the big pay out. I would add that whilst I would always want Argyle to go up, I would still think it wrong to do it this way if they had won.
Well all the teams that finished 7th went to wembley.. so that is the rules and not a lot we can do.. i understand what your saying but none of the teams promoted are moaning now.. Yep i think a few will leave and Reid will definitely be gone..
I'm glad I don't have to watch Luke McCormick every week.....he scared the pants off me....the way he wandered up field well outside his area.....just asking to be lobbed....why does he do it ?
But he wasn't lobbed plym so you worried for nothing. He had a decent game yesterday with little to do and not being to blame for either goal. When he could do something he pulled off a couple of very decent saves. I know it's the rules Joe but I still marvel at why they exist even. If you look at the supposed top competitions in Europe you have to wonder at why they came up with the who qualifies format. How can you be competing in a Champions League when you came 4th in your domestic league? The 2 finalists this year weren't even Champions to start with. Why do they even bother with the Europa league? It's worthless as a prestigeous competition. TV and money is the only thing I can think of.
I omitted Luke by accident: he did all that could be expected including one excellent save but keepers can't win games if you don't score at the other end. It wasn't McHugh's best game and he looked ragged at the end when it all got very frenetic but he tackled strongly as ever. If you had to choose between him and the contribution from Premier League Boateng, I'll take McHugh. Carey was anonymous in open play for whatever reason.
I'd keep McHugh without hesitation notdistant. Generally he is Mr Reliable but just not yesterday for me. I'd also take Boateng as well but that's not going to happen. Carey got marked out of the game. Everytime he was on the ball several players were on him. He had little space to do anything but he did seem incapable of thinking it out. It's almost unbelievable that the team out yesterday were the same players that had done so well in previous games. It also seemed unbelievable that the Manager was the same one we were praising earlier for having a plan B. I saw no sign of a plan A let alone a B. I'm not disappointed at the result but I am disappointed at the manner of our performance. We are so much better than that. The supporters deserved much better than that. We should never have been in the position of having to play in that game in the first place and for that I do blame Brent for not having the foresight to provide at least something to aid the push on. We have been a team of 2 halfs many times before but this time it was a team of 2 halfs of the season.
The Final. For me the Final was the second leg of the Portsmouth game.. I just watched the replay of that game with a sold out Home park.. By far the most exciting game of the year. Peter Hartley heading in with time almost out.. You ought to see yourselves Sensible was going wild the whole place was going wild. For me that was the FINAL.. From the Mountains of BC thank you all for the fun we have had this season.
It's a pity it wasn't the final BC. I admit to being a tad happy at the end of that one and might have jumped up and down a bit.......... No need to thank anyone BC everyone joined in. Hope you aren't hibernating now for the summer. We need contributions from everyone.
Sensible - Having been impressed with Wylde's pace when he first arrived, I have to admit to my admiration cooling now. I think perhaps you were right, his final ball isn't good enough...... Maybe it's just the depression regarding things Argyle generally.
There's a depression over my home at the moment........heavy rain, semi-dark and damned cold for the 1st of June.
Don't worry, it's pissing down here as well. Pompey and Plymouth a good shout for automatic next season.
